Back Country Gold Trail
New Zealand’s South Island is well known for its snow capped mountains, tumbling rivers and spectacular scenery. In “The Gold Trail 4 day” you will discover the wide open spaces, stunning Southern Lakes and abandoned goldfields of Central Otago, the scene for a massive gold-rush in the 1860’s, the largest gold-rush in New Zealand. During the trip there is unlimited opportunity to get off the beaten track to explore and experience a different face of New Zealand.
Our journey begins in Dunedin - “Edinburgh of the South”, one of the oldest and most picturesque cities in NZ. We bike through stunning mountain valleys, follow meandering rivers and through a region which can be the hottest (in summer), coldest (in winter) and driest in New Zealand. We bike across wild landscapes of craggy rock formations, many of which were used as settings for the famous “Lord of the Rings” movies, and experience genuine Kiwi hospitality and lifestyle.
Most of the riding is on non-technical un-paved roads, with some dirt and 4x4 roads. We have chosen he remote classic routes and little known back-roads that not only get us to the next destination but also to show you the real New Zealand. With full 4x4 vehicle support, this trip can be enjoyed by anyone with some off-road cycling experience. The trip does include some challenging climbs (but remember we always have the support vehicle if you need a helping hand up those climbs!).
At the end of each day we stay in a variety of guesthouses, hostels, lodges with the ever-present hot showers, cold beers and opportunities to experience some of New Zealand’s finest hospitality and local cuisine.
