Overview
Can you imagine paddling your kayak to some of the most remote beaches on earth, accessing areas rarely visited because your sea kayak is the only way in or out. Can you imagine drifting over magnificent coral reefs and dodging small whirlpools that dot the seas in which you are paddling. Can you imagine visiting islands that are uninhabited and ones that are still inhabited by mythical Dragons. If you can, then our Komodo Kayaker is for you.
The Komodo National Park is made up of over two dozen islands between Sumbawa and Flores. These prehistoric lookings islands are home to the Komodo Dragon, a creature that time seemed to forget. These mighty beast are over 3m long and weigh up to 150kg. But don\'t let their slow nature fool you, when food or mating are involved, the Dragon can run nearly 30km per hour.
The Komodo Dragon however is just one attraction of the park. The area boasts some of the best marine life on the planet, with dozens of reefs in which we will snorkel. We will visit sites where manta ray and turtle are common. It is also home to uninhabited islands and glorious beaches.
We will visit small stilted villages and experience life on the sea like nowhere else.
This 10 day expedition from Bali is one of a kind. We are the only operator running kayaking expeditions in the National Park. You will be part of something that very few have experienced before, kayaking the Komodo Islands, Indonesia.
As part of this expedition, you will be helping to preserve the local eco- system through donations from No Roads and cleaning the park of all plastics as we go. Through the work that we and other like minded organisations do, we hope that the Komodo National Park will remain an attraction for our children's children.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Bali and transfer to hotel. Free time to relax.
Day 2: Fly Bali to Labuan Bajo. Arrive at Komodo Labuan Bajo airport (B).
You will be met at the airport by one of our team members and taken to Bajo Komodo Eco Lodge. This afternoon you will meet with your Guide and have a chance to practice paddling techniques etc. Overnight in Hotel.
Day 3: Labuan Bajo - Bibadari Island (B, L, D)
Today we start paddling. Our first destination is Bibadari Island for snorkelling and relaxing on the beach. We will paddle into a local village that is raised on stilts above the sea and spend the night there as a guest of the people. – sail to Rinca Island to see the Komodo dragon and other island wild life – sail to Kalong Island.
Day 4: Bibadari - Kalong Island (B, L, D)
After breakfast we will start our paddle into the Komodo National Park. The waters are pristine an d we will have ample opportunity to swim and snorkel as we will be only paddling to the next island across, Kalong Island. Overnight in tents.
Day 5: Kalong Island to Red Beach on Komodo Island (B,L,D)
Today we paddle from Kalong Island to Red Beach for snorkelling, swimming and relaxing. We will set up camp here though during the day we need to be aware that Dragons can smell our food and may visit us. At night the Dragons sleep. Overnight on the beach in a tent.
Day 6: Red Beach – Komodo National Park HQ – Padar Island (B,L,D)This is a long day so we will get up early and head for the National Park HQ on Komodo. There we will tie our kayaks up and have a guided tour of a part of the island we hope will see Dragons. From there we paddle across a very tricky strait between Komodo and Padar island. The strait is full of whirlpools and strong currents and your guide is essential here. We camp overnight on Padar Island. Tent on the beach.
Day 7: Padar Island – Rinca Island. (B, L, D)
Considered the better of the two Dragon habitats, we paddle from Padar to Rinca island again across a tricky strait. This will be a fairly easy day with snorkelling and swimming available. We will be shown around Rinca Island by a National Park Ranger. The Dragons are more accessible here. We will also see monkeys, water buffalo and deer. Overnight at the Rangers headquarters.
Day 8: Rinca Island – Rinca Island. (B, L, D)
Today we will meander back towards Labuan Bajo along the coast of Rinca. We will stop in and witness village life and get a chance to do more snorkelling and maybe a spot of fishing. We will camp on the northern tip of Rinca for our last night under the stars.
Day 9: Rinca - Labuan Bajo (B)
We head back to “civilization” with a fairly long haul to the Eco Lodge. Along the way we will have the chance to stop off to relax and swim. Once back at the hotel we will clean up have lunch and then head off for a tour to the Mirror Stone Caves and if possible witness the famous Manggaraines traditional fighting dance (Caci Dance) – Tonight you will have your final dinner with your Kayaking Guides at the hotel. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 10: Labuan Bajo – Bali (B)
We will have a bit of free time before we fly back to Bali today. We can have a swim at the Eco Lodge pool, go into town and walk around the harbour or just relax on the sprawling veranda overlooking the sea. You will be met at Bali airport by the hotel and taken there. You can either stay the night at the hotel or fly out to your next destination later that evening. Either way you will have a room available to yourselves. End of expedition.
The Komodo Dragon
Komodo dragons are the largest lizard still living on Earth, but they are not the largest reptile. Alligators and crocodiles get bigger than Komodo dragons.
Komodo dragons are a monitor lizard. Their scientific name is Varanus komodoensis. They grow to 3m in length and can weigh as much as 150kg. While they are usually slow moving, they can put on spurts of speed equal to a dog.
Komodo dragons drool copiously. Their saliva is not venomous, but the mouth of a Komodo dragon is so full of bacteria that a bite from one almost always leads to infection. If untreated, the infection is usually fatal. This is one way in which the dragons get food. They hide in the scraggly jungle and wait for a victim to pass by. The victim is most often a deer, carabao or goat. The dragon attacks the prey, and may succeed in killing it on the spot. Otherwise, the bites sustained by the victim will generally kill it eventually, and the dragons will then eat the carrion.
The giant lizards have powerful claws which they use to devastating effect in fights with other lizards. Males have scratching fights with each other during mating season.
Komodo dragons are excellent swimmers, and can swim from one island to another. The island of Komodo has many beautiful beaches where a visitor can play and swim, but the presence of Komodo dragon foot- and tail- prints in the sand warns the visitor to be cautious and watchful.
Marine Life
Some of Komodo\'s beaches have beautiful pink sand, tinted by fragments of red coral mixed in with other shell and coral fragments. Other beaches have gray sand derived from cliffs of rhyolite. Heavy black sand composed of nearly pure magnetite accumulates next to the cliffs.
The snorkeling and diving around Komodo are some of the best in the world, especially for seeing soft corals. A professional diver told us, "You know, when you\'re a diver, you spend your life dreaming of and searching for the best dive site in the world. Well, Komodo is it."
Indonesia Tourist Visa
From February 2004, Indonesia has imposed a US$25 entry Visa. This Visa is for 30 days and can be purchased on arrival at Denpassar airport in Bali. While personal photos are not required it is advised that you bring the exact amount to prevent any delays.
