Climbing Mount Huascaran

The twin peaks of Huascaran are the most prominent and highest summits of Peru, dominating the entire valley of the Rio Santa. Huascaran is the highest tropical mountain of America, a fact that has attracted numerous expeditions from all over the world since the beginning of the twentieth century. Regarding the origin of the name there are various versions on the map of Ancash; Antonio Raimondi (1873), the snowy appears with the name of Huascan, which would mean "attractive" or "tempting" according to the scholar G. Stiglich (1922). This same person, raises that would have existed a property near the mountain called Hacienda Huascaran, but does not mention whether the ranch was named after the mountain or vice-versa.

Over the past few centuries there have been several disasters associated with glacial events in the Nevado Huascaran. The worst of these catastrophes occurred on May 31, 1970, when the movement induced by a strong earthquake caused landslides of glaciers in the Huascaran Norte, producing the most horrible barrage so far registered. The barrage not only dropped by the Rio Shacsha, but part of it even managed to overcome a hill and then completely bury the town of Yungay, including approximately 17, 000 people. Ironically, the only thing that was spared the devastation was the cemetery of Yungay.

Currently, this whole area is declared Saint field.
