The Border Inn is a luxurious dog sledding lodge situated 1 mile from the Russian border in the pristine wilderness of Kuusamo. All our husky safaris travel along the Finnish-Russian border where you will experience the sights and sounds of the arctic winter. Bear , wolf , lynx and wolverine are all found along the Russian border and are in fact more prolific in this region as many are crossing over from Russia and the border zone is a hunting safe area where the wild animals can retreat to safety. Elk,reindeer and an assortment of wild birds will also almost certainly be sited as we are pulled along the Russian border by our trusty companions the dogs.

Itinerary / Highlights

Day One

Arrival to Kuusamo and transfer by 4x4 to The Border Inn. On arrival to the lodge you will be shown your accommodation and a warm sauna will await. Evening meal and discussion of the following weeks schedule.

Day Two

After breakfast you will be supplied with your winter equipment and then taken on a tour of the kennel and a chance to meet the dogs. Full sled driving instruction will then be given before we depart on a 25km training dog sled tour. The terrain for the training tour is not so technical and is a great opportunity to hone your dog sledding skills and also to learn your dogs names and start to build a working rapor with them.

Day three to six

We depart after a hearty breakfast on a four day wilderness dog sled safari.Travelling north along the Russian border we will cover between 30-50km per day with sled. The scenery is breathtaking and if the dogs catch sight of an elk,reindeer or wild bird then the pace is also breathtaking but with well trained dogs and guides a simple command and the dogs will continue on the correct trail without any misshap. Stops along the route will be made for a chance to take some photographs and also a light snack for the musher´s aswell as for the dogs. Evenings will be spent in cosy wilderness cabins along the trail and with some luck the magical aurora borealis will grace us with an appearance


Day seven

After returning to the lodge the previous evening, enjoying a relaxing sauna and an excellent meal, day seven can either be a relaxation day or at a minimal extra cost (150 euro per snowmachine) we can take a four hour snowmachine tour stoping for lunch by the open fire. It is also possible to do some cross-country skiing, down hill skiing/snowboarding, a visit to the local spa or some clay pigeon/rifle shooting.

Transfer to Kuusamo airport and departure

Accommodation Details

The main lodge is situated in the centre of large fenced compound. The ground level has three double guest rooms. There is a large traditional Lappish stone fireplace in the main Takkahuone*. Adjoining the takkahuone there is a wood burning sauna for 10 persons and a double shower complex. The first floor of the lodge is the main meeting and socialising area of the Border Inn. Here you will find the bar/restaurant with seating for 12 at the Kelo** wood table and 4 at the bar.
