Itinerary / Highlights

Day 1 – 5 Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, Chobe National Park

From Johannesburg we travel to the South Africa’s best known game reserve, Kruger National Park. We search for Africa’s ‘Big Five’ - lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard - and an immense variety of birdlife - the perfect introduction to Africa. Continuing north into Botswana, we pass through Francistown and Nata to Kasane and nearby Chobe National Park. Highly recommended here is the option of the Chobe River cruise to see hippo, buffalo, elephant, and a variety of birdlife.

Day 6 – 10 Zambia, Victoria Falls

We cross the Zambezi River on the Kazangula ferry, enter Zambia and drive the short distance to Livingstone. Our camp is on the banks of the Zambezi and is a great base from which to explore the Victoria Falls area. Numerous activities are available – white water rafting, scenic flights, canoeing, gorge swinging, elephant back safaris. We have time to visit the magnificent Victoria Falls themselves and explore the nearby river bank.

Day 11 – 15 Kafue River, Malawi

From Livingstone we continue north, pausing at the Kafue River for a cruise and visit to a local village. Continuing through Lusaka we reach Malawi, the ‘warm heart’ of Africa. Passing through Lilongwe we reach the enormous Lake Malawi, Africa’s third largest lake, where we camp on sandy beaches, enjoy the swimming and meet the famously friendly locals.

Day 16 – 22 Mikumi National Park, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar

We continue north into Tanzania. Travelling through some remote areas, we pass by Mikumi National Park before reaching the Indian Ocean coast and port city, Dar es Salaam. ‘Dar’ is Tanzania’s main commercial centre and the jumping-off point for Zanzibar - the ‘Spice Island’! Time here is at your leisure. Rich in history, Zanzibar offers a blissful mix of exotic spice markets, winding alleyways and old palaces as well as sparkling warm water ocean and stretches of palm-fringed sands.

Day 23 – 29 Arusha, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Nairobi

Back on the African mainland we travel back inland where, if the weather is in clear we see the enormous snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak (5895m), as we make our way to Tanzania’s safari capital, Arusha. Visit the snake enclosure at the Meserani Snake Park and make friends on a guided walk to the local Maasai village to learn something of their traditional culture. In Arusha we switch to 4x4 vehicles for a 2 night/3-day safari to Tanzania’s premier parks, the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. The scenery in this area is staggering as we cross the Rift Valley and drive around the Ngorongoro Crater rim to the Serengeti plains beyond. Game viewing can be spectacular here and camping out on the plains a memorable experience. We return to Arusha before our final drive north across the border into Kenya Nairobi where our tour ends.
