Since prehistoric times, civilisations have vied to rule the natural harbour of Essaouira. Carthaginians and Romans made it a trading post and source of precious purple dye, pirates dropped anchor, the Portuguese built a fortress and Britons, Jews and Moors mingled in the cosmopolitan markets. Now you too can discover what makes this laidback, bohemian town so delightful and addictive - these days, it's an artists' colony perfect to wander and discover one-of-a-kind works. This is a beach getaway unlike any other, resonant with the cries of gulls as fishermen haul their catch and alive with the gentle magic of Morocco.

Explore Essaouira with an expert local guide, Ride bicycles along the beach promenade, Lose yourself in art galleries and market, Browse the medina for a one-off treasure, Wander through streets perfumed with spices and wood oil.

Itinerary / Highlights

Day 1 Marrakech/ Essaouira-
Depart Marrakech by local express coach to beautiful seaside Essaouira. The name 'Essaouira' means 'beautifully designed', an appropriate name for such a picturesque town. Sheltered by Mogador Island and dotted with riads, fishing boats and winding alleys, Essaouira's charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts you'll find whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters, art galleries and wood workshops, all of which will be explored in the company of an expert local guide. Outside the ramparts is stunning coastal views and 18th century sea walls that have inspired artists and writers alike over the centuries.

Day 2 Essaouira-
Start the morning with a walk along the walls to watch colourful fishing boats re-entering the harbour. Then head off to explore the nearby Berber village of Diabat once a favourite town of the hippy movement on bicycle. In the evening be sure to head to the ramparts for views over town and sea and try some fresh seafood from local restaurants.

Day 3 Essaouira/ Marrakech-
There's a final chance to shop in the markets and galleries for paintings, leather babouches or handicrafts before bidding this charming seaside town farewell. Transfer back to the airport or hotel in Marrakech by local coach.
