Itinerary
& Highlights |
| |
Day 1 Quito - The historical Old Town of Quito boasts colourful markets, a rich colonial atmosphere and narrow cobbled streets full of 'indigenas' and 'mestizos'.
Day 2 Seymour - Our first stop in the Galapagos, Seymour, is home to the islands' largest frigate bird colony. Keep an eye out for nesting couples and their chicks on a walk around the island.
Day 3 Santa Fe - Visit a sea lion bachelor pad and watch them play from the beach. There is an opportunity to hike through a sparse forest of prickly pear to the cliffside domain of land iguanas.
Day 4 Espanola - Spot some of the Galapagos' colourful birds on the region's southernmost island. See masked boobies, waved albatrosses and red-billed tropic birds. This is also a good place to spot marine iguanas.
Day 5 Floreana - Leave a letter to be collected from the 'post office barrel' just as mariners have done for centuries and watch flamingos strut their stuff on a beach of green sand. For underwater adventures, go snorkelling along Devil's Crown.
Day 6 Santa Cruz/Quito - Watch blue-footed boobie birds dive for fish, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and see Giant Tortoises. Return to Quito for a final look at Ecuador.
Days 7-8 Lima - Fly from Quito to Lima for the next part of your South American adventure. In Lima, get a feel for Peru's colonial past on a guided walk through the historic centre which is surrounded by churches, museums and streets of carved balconies and has a distinctly Spanish flavour.
Day 9 Cuzco - Possibly the most charming city in the Andes, Cuzco overflows with Spanish colonial buildings and the remains of ancient temples. Take the opportunity to visit the former temple of the sun, Sacsayhuaman and Tambo Machay, a shrine dedicated to the forces of water.
Day 10 Sacred Valley - Explore the colourful artisan markets and Inca ruins of Pisac before spending the night in the ancient town of Ollantaytambo. Clamber up the giant terraces that guard the town's temple-fortress for great views of the world below.
Days 11-15 Inca Trail/Cuzco - Follow the ancient paths of the Inca Empire as they wind past mountains, across high plateaus and through dense cloud forest and temple ruins. On the final day, watch the sunrise over awe-inspiring Machu Picchu before returning to Cuzco in the late afternoon, in time to head out for a celebratory meal. |
