Galloway Wilderness Expedition
This is a stunning trip through the historical wilds of Galloway. You are unlikely to encounter many other people in this isolated part of Scotland so you’ll have the beautiful scenery all to yourself. There will, of course, always be a warm welcome at some selected local inns to rest your weary legs. The route takes in truly breathtaking scenery and cycling – some of Scotland’s best.

Highlights
Loch Doon and Loch Bradan
Circumnavigating Britain’s largest Forest Park
The ‘hidden’ trails from Barr to Barrhill
Detailed itinerary
Day 1. Arrive in Gatehouse of Fleet. If you have time, take in some of the fantastic local biking at one of the 7 Stanes trails. We’ll have an evening briefing before getting ready to leave in the morning.
Day 2. Get straight into the off-road trails with a climb out of the Fleet valley, giving great views back out to sea. Follow the old railroad and Raiders road past Clatteringshaws Loch, eventually reaching the picturesque St. John’s Town of Dalry in the evening.
Day 3. Climb up past the eerie yet interesting mines of Garryhorn, to the stunning castle on the shore of Loch Doon. Then it’s up and over the fabulous Bradan trail and Aqueduct road, following the Stinchar Valley, to the village of Barr in South Ayrshire.
Day 4. From Barr you head south over some great wilderness trails via the hard-to-find and sometimes hard-to-follow Clauchrie route. Eventually, it spits you out near Barrhill where we wind even further south through the forest. Linking in with a stretch of sweet single-track past ancient standing stones, we reach the pretty village of New Luce.
Day 5. The homeward leg should see the wind on your back if not the power in your legs! You pass more lochs than you could shake a fishing rod at before dropping down into the bustling market town of Newton Stewart. The old railway guides you home along the coast. Look out for the final twist in the tale before reaching Gatehouse of Fleet. |
