     Kilimanjaro Peaks - Marangu Route

Trekking and Walking in Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) with Intrepid Guerba Ltd

This classic trek is the most popular route, and the only one serviced by mountain huts to keep you well protected from the elements. It?s the most direct route to the summit and covers the 67km trail in only 5 days (or 6 if you decide to take some extra time to acclimatise). Although it can be busy, the route is well maintained and makes a fabulous trek to a spectacular summit.

   Itinerary & Highlights

Day 1 Kilimanjaro Airport/Marangu - Transfer to Arusha from either Kilimanjaro Airport or Nairobi, before travelling on to Moshi. On the drive, admire views of the snow-capped mountains. There will be a full briefing and kit inspection at Marangu.

Day 2 Mandara Hut - Meet the guides and porters and start trekking from Marangu Gate at the entrance to the Mt Kilimanjaro National Park. From here we trek through rainforest to the first mountain hut. Watch for brightly coloured birds and different types of monkeys in the forest. There is also the option to walk to nearby Maundi Crater.

Day 3 Horombo Hut - The trekking gets slightly steeper as the rainforest gives way to alpine meadows dotted with giant heather trees. Once out of the forest canopy, the snow-tipped peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi lie directly ahead. Cross several ravines before reaching the campsite set in a rocky valley.

Day 4 Kibo Hut - Here the landscape becomes progressively more rugged and rocky, the air noticeably thinner and the pace slows accordingly. Giant groundsels and lobelias appear in sparse moorland. The trail skirts Mawenzi Peak and crosses the stark lunar landscape of the Saddle before reaching Kibo Hut for an early night.

Day 5 Kilimanjaro Summit - Wake at midnight and enjoy a cup of hot tea before beginning the last leg of the trek. Zig-zag up a large scree slope by lantern light to reach Gillman's Point, hopefully in time to see breathtaking views of the sun rising behind Mawenzi Peak. To reach the summit, there is another couple of hours trekking along the rim of the crater. From Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, the views are unforgettable. So is the sense of achievement when you look down over the ice fields and distant East African plains.

Days 6-7 Marangu/Kilimanjaro Airport - Continue to descend the mountain through the alpine meadows and rainforest to the park gate. Return to the hotel for a relaxing shower or bath; a real treat after the physical exertion of the last few days! Relive the glories of the past week over a celebratory meal. The trip ends with an airport transfer or on day 7.
