     Kilimanjaro - Rongai Route

Trekking and Walking in Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) with Intrepid Guerba Ltd

Just three degrees south of the Equator is the 5,895m (19,340ft) high, permanently snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. It offers one of the best opportunities in the world to climb a peak at high altitude without needing technical climbing ability. Any normally fit, healthy person prepared for some physical exertion and exercise should be able to complete the ascent to Uhuru Peak, which involves approximately 70 kilometres of walking in total, and no technical climbing.

   Itinerary & Highlights

Day 1 Kilimanjaro Airport/Marangu - Transfer to the family-run Marangu Hotel in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro. Designed in the style of a turn of the century farmhouse, the hotel is set in 12 acres of delightful tropical gardens, a tranquil place to get ready for the trek ahead. There is a full briefing and kit inspection from an experienced Kilimanjaro climber at the hotel.

Day 2 First Cave - The trek begins under the northern face of Kilimanjaro. The first day is a pleasant stroll through the rainforest up to the open moorland. In the forest there are many species of brightly coloured birds and different types of monkeys to be seen and heard.

Day 3 Kikelewa Cave - The trekking gets steeper as the rainforest gives way to open and rolling alpine meadows dotted with giant heather trees. Out of the rainforest the twin peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi lie ahead and magnificent views over the Amboseli plains behind us. Tonight is spent near Kikelewa Cave.

Day 4 Mawenzi Tarn - Ascend slowly up to Mawenzi Tarn the only permanent tarn (lake) on Kilimanjaro. Make camp in the shadow of Mawnezi peak, Kilimanjaro's second highest at 5,149 m (16,893 ft). The later part of the afternoon is free to relax or explore the surrounding area a great way to get acclimatised to the altitude.

Day 5 Kibo Camp - Leaving the lake behind, cross the saddle between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo where the scenery resembles a lunar landscape. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing. Have an early night in preparation for the final ascent early the next day.

Day 6 Summit - Awake early to begin the final trek to the summit. Zig-zag up a large scree slope to reach Gillman's Point, hopefully in time to see the sun rising over the ice-fields of the crater. Continue to the summit for unforgettable views of the crater, ice fields and vast and distant east African plains. Descend back to Horombo Hut for a well earned rest.

Days 7-8 Marangu/Kilimanjaro Airport - Descend the mountain and be met by transport at the gates. Return to the Marangu Hotel for a relaxing shower or bath and a steaming meal before transferring to Kilimanjaro Airport on day 8.
