Saturday: arrival in Palermo:
You can reach Palermo by ferry, plane, train, or even on foot… Just tell us where you arrive and we’ll come and pick you up and take you to our Villa Guscisa in San Martino delle Scale where you’ll meet the others and talk about the week’s programme. Everyone will help make the fish-food barbie dinner party a success
Sunday: San Martino delle Scale – Portorosa 250 km.
A typical Sicilian breakfast follows the wake-up call and precedes a day full of emotions; a visit to ancient Cefalù and mile after mile of coastal roads before riding up into the Nebrodi Mountain Park where uncontaminated nature frames unique views of the Aeolian isles which seem to come straight out of a fairy tale. We stop off in Randazzo to try the typical pistachio ice-cream before arriving in the evening at the 5-star Hilton Portorosa Hotel for a buffet dinner and over night stay.
Monday: Portorosa – Acireale 160 km. circa
Etna is our destination, but first we get to ride along the SS.185, one of the most beautiful roads in Sicily passing through old mountain villages like Novara di Sicilia that seems to cling onto the cliff face. The heavy fragrance of gorse will accompany us until we catch sight of a supreme Etna as is, for Sicilian bikers, the road with exceptional grip twisting up to Piano Provenzana and the Brunek refuge where the mythical host Michele, good friend of Motoexplora and all Sicilian bikers, will set up lunch. We reach 2000 m. above sea level and walk along the edge of the Silvestri craters that dominate the Ionian coast and Catania. Come evening, we’ll be down by the private beaches of the 4-star S. Tecla Palace Hotel in Acireale for the night.
Tuesday:
Tuesday is a day for relaxing with the possibility of an excursion to Taormina or an optional sail along the lava-strewn coastline of the Ionian Sea. Dinner is in a typical sea-food restaurant and overnight stay at the S. Tecla Palace Hotel.
Wednesday: Acireale – Leonforte 290 km. circa
The day starts with a typical Catania-style breakfast; almond granita and brioche! And then off to discover the Sicilian baroque towns of Noto, Modica, and Ragusa Ibla and, in the afternoon, the pottery town of Caltagirone. Dinner and overnight stay at the 4-star, golf-resort Hotel Villa Gussio Nicoletti.
Thursday: Leonforte / Leonforte 70 km. circa.
A short morning ride through the hills around Enna and a visit to the marvellous Roman Villa “del Casale”, a Late-imperial Roman villa famous for its mosaics. In the afternoon, free entry to Villa Gussio’s health spa with sauna and Jacuzzi and, at extra cost, a massage. Evening meal.
Friday: Leonforte – Sciacca 200 km. circa
Down along the SS.122 as far as the Maccalube of Aragona to visit a nature reserve run by the environmental league that safeguards a rare geological phenomenon called sedimentary volcanism, but then on to Agrigento and a passage through the Valley of Temples. Riding on towards Sciacca, orange blossom fills the air until we reach Caltabellotta, a fine hill town with a breathtaking view over the Sicilian Straits. Then onto the Torre Tabia in Sciacca to delight our palate with Calogero’s marvellous traditional cuisine.
Saturday: Sciacca – Palermo 150 km circa.
In the morning, we set out to discover the ghost town of Poggioreale that was razed to the ground by the terrible 1968 earthquake that shook the whole Belice Valley. The film director Giusseppe Tornatore used it to set some scenes for his film “Malena” with the splendid Monica Bellucci. Then we ride on through some of the most famous Sicilian vineyards to Segesta and its perfect 5th-c. B.C. Doric temple. In the afternoon, we ride on to Monreale and then back to Palermo for the final farewells. |
