Mount Kenya Summit to Sea Mountain Bike Journey

In a nutshell: As the name suggests, we will climb to the summit of Pt Lenana, then hike and bike our way to the coast approximately 600 km's away. There is also rafting and some game viewing on the trip.

Note: This itinerary is designed to be flexible based on road and weather conditions and the unexpected surprises of adventure travel in Africa.

A self powered journey from Sirimon Park gate to Pt Lenana (4980 metres), to
Malindi on Kenya’s north coast. This journey includes whitewater rafting, trekking,
game viewing and mountain biking through most of the countries climatic zones.
This is truly a once in a lifetime journey that is not to be missed.

Day 1: Morning arrival in Nairobi, transfer to Sagana River Base

Day 2: Mt Kenya – Sirimon Gate to Judimer Camp
Today is just a short warm up trek of approx. 3-4 hours from the park gate to your first camp.

Day 3: Judimer Camp to Liki North
A slightly longer day today with a good elevation gain, you will likely start feeling the change in elevation on this beautiful ridge top hike.

Day 4: Liki North to Shipton’s Camp
A reasonably short hike today with only 200 meters elevation gain. After lunch we will hike up to Hausebergs Col to help with the acclimatization process, this will help ready us for our summit bid tomorrow morning.

Day 5: Summit to Met Station
After your 2am wake up call (coffee in your tent) we will head onwards an upwards to Pt Lenana. All things going to plan we will be on the summit by approx. 6am just in time to see the sunrise. After obligatory photos and celebrations we will descend via the Naro Moru route to the Met Station where we will camp and meet up with our bikes.

Day 6: On the bikes – Met Station to Sagana River Base (100 km from 2,950m – 1,100m)
An early start will see us cruising downhill off Mt Kenya, the days riding will be predominantly on dirt back roads, crossing the occasional tar sealed road, and cruising through small townships. As you can see there is a lot of elevation lost so a super fun days riding.

Day 7: Rafting the Tana River
Today we will head upstream from camp and raft the exciting Class III/IV+ Tana River. With many exciting rapids and inquisitive locals this is one very cool rafting trip. The afternoon can be spent relaxing under an Acacia tree, taking a dip in the pool, bike riding or taking a hike around the local area.

Day 8: Back on the bikes – Sagana to 14 Falls National Park area
An early start will see us pedaling our way out of Sagana and onwards to the coast. Again we will be riding mainly back roads today with a fairly mellow grade. The final stretch of our ride will take us through the large town of Thika onto the 14 Falls National Park.

Day 9: Riding – 14 Falls National Park to Kilala area
Again we will start early and get back on the bikes, more variable dirt road riding today. Upon reaching Kilala we will carry on a little further before picking a campsite that tickles our fancy.

Day 10: Riding – Kilala to Wild Camp
The distance we ride today will depend on energy levels; we will cross the main Nairobi Mombassa Road then keep riding until we are a) too tired or b) find a camp that we simply cannot pass up.

Day 11: Riding – Wild Camp to Wild Camp (in the shadows of Kilimanjaro)
Today we will ride past the turnoff to Amboselli National Park, and our journey will take us amazingly close to Mt Kilimanjaro which is just across the border in Tanzania. We will cover 50 + kilometers today as the further we ride today the shorter our ride to the Tsavo West park gates will be tomorrow

Day 12: Riding – Wild Camp to Tsavo West National Park Gates
Depending on the distance we traveled yesterday we should have a relatively short ride to the park gates where we will jump in the vehicle and start the safari portion of our trip. We will game drive to our lodge for the next 2 nights.

Day 13: Riding – Game Drives in Tsavo West
We will have a well earned day of rest today. The day will be a mix of game drives, relaxing at the lodge, eating and some more relaxing.

Day 14: Riding – Tsavo West to Malindi (some driving)
After an early breakfast we will jump in the vehicle and heat east out of the park and then drive south on the main Nairobi – Mombassa Highway. We will drive to Mariakani (to avoid riding on the main highway), then we will head east to Kilifi, where we will reach the Kenyan north coast. After soaking up our achievement we will either continue riding (time dependant) or load up and drive the remaining distance to Malindi and our awaiting beach resort.

Day 15: Relaxing - Malindi
Now we have made it, time to truly soak up what you have achieved. Enjoy some ice cold beverages, a dip in the ocean or just sit by the pool. For the overly energetic we can arrange boat trips, scuba diving, snorkeling and more

Day 16: Relaxing – Malindi – Departure Day
Another morning to enjoy your surroundings on the beach before a 2:40pm departure back to Nairobi to connect with your international flight home
