Mysterious Staritsa
A great adventure on the banks of Volga!
This tour offers some of the most picturesque views of the upper reaches of Volga. On the right bank we find one of the oldest monasteries of Russia, on the left – mysterious labyrinths of limestone quarries. On our way to Staritsa we visit the «Russian Versailles» as well as the first Soviet rural hydroelectric power station, while on the way back we discover a real Gothic cathedral in the depths of Tver countryside. This two-day trip with Territory RUS won't leave anyone indifferent.
We invite you to spend 2 days exploring the Staritsa area by going off the beaten track and visiting sights not usually included in the main tourist routes. Along the way we encounter various obstacles and everyone gets a chance to master his or her 4x4 driving skills.
We provide specially prepared cars, guidance, food and accommodation. Our friendly English-speaking guides give necessary tuition and assistance and also make sure you get the best insight into Russian culture and history.

Itinerary / Highlights
Day 1: Moscow - Staritsa - Zubtsov (280 km)The high-speed New Riga highway quickly brings our group to Volokolamsk - the oldest city of Moscow Region. Having passed through it, we soon find ourselves in the Yaropolets village, where we spend an hour and a half, examining the estates of Goncharov and Chernyshev families, amazing Kazan Church and the historical rural hydroelectric power station. After that we move on to the Tver region, learning along our way about the destiny of Shakhovskoy princes, merchant Baev and the production of first Russian cheese. Soon we reach the banks of Volga – the mother of all Russian rivers, on which the ancient Assumption monastery of the city of Staritsa stands. Besides magnificent architecture and rich history we are awaited here by a real monastic meal, which you will certainly enjoy. The afternoon is devoted to off-roading - the old path along Volga has not been used for a long time and it is accessible only by our well prepared 4x4 vehicles. Around 10 pm we arrive at the hotel in the city of Zubtsov, where we have a smart dinner with wine.
Day 2: Zubtsov - Staritsa - Moscow (350 km)
After breakfast we return to Staritsa and climb up to the high left bank of Volga, where once there used to be a fortress, and nowadays we find some impressive churches. By taking the picturesque route along the Volga we soon reach the famous Staritsa caves (old abandoned quarries in fact) where you have a fascinating excursion combined with a treasure hunt and after that a lunch with a view in the open air. Having crossed several smaller rivers by wade, we finally get to our last object - a Gothic cathedral in a regular Tver village. The tour ends around 10 pm as we make our way back to Moscow.
