Itinerary & Highlights
Days 1-2: Johannesburg To Maun. The trip leaves Johannesburg at 7.30am and heads north to Botswana, a sparsely populated country that is dominated by the Kalahari Desert. The town of Maun is the gateway to the Delta and is also Botswana's third largest city. There is the option to do flights in light aircraft over the Delta. These can be organised by your tour leader.
Days 3-5: Maun And The Okavango Delta. Leaving Maun we go into the Okavango Delta for 3 days (2 nights). The Okavango Delta is formed by the Okavango River, which flows into the desert and disappears as it fans out to form the Delta. We camp in the bush at designated free camps as a lodge or hotel is not the way to see this region. There are bush walks and trips in Mokoro's where it is possible to see some wildlife. We take all our own equipment and food and bring it all back out (including the rubbish) of the area. The method of transport is by 4 wheel drive vehicle, motorboat and Makoro (dug out canoe in Setswana). The Makoro's are traditionally made of wood but as they come to the end of their serviceability fiberglass canoes are now replacing them. These are not quite as authentic but the old canoes take a whole tree to make and the environment is beginning to suffer. The water level in the area has dropped because of the over use of the water further upstream, which is threatening desertification. The delta region is home to a vast amount of animals and it is possible to take some walks to try to see them. This region has a lot of environmental problems. There are now restrictions on the amount of hotels and tourists allowed into the region in an attempt to reduce the environmental hazards that it faces.
Days 6-7: Chobe National Park And Victoria Falls. From the delta we cross to Chobe National Park in northern Botswana. At Chobe we do an evening boat cruise, usually from 15.00pm until 18.00pm and a 3-hour game drive the following morning. Both the boat cruise and the game drive give us great game viewing opportunities in one of the largest parks in southern Africa. After the game drive we will enjoy a late breakfast and then depart for the 2-hour drive to Victoria Falls one of the world's natural wonders. We will arrive at Victoria Falls early afternoon and advise you to allow for a few days after the tour to enjoy the sites and sounds of the adrenaline capital of Africa. The tour will end at 17.30pm on the last day of the tour. Accommodation on Day 7 in NOT included. Victoria Falls are on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. They are neither the highest nor the widest in the world but are spectacular because they have cut a massive gorge in the earth. There are many optional excursions available at the Falls, the most famous being the white water rafting on the Lower Zambezi. This excursion takes a full day and has 14 rapids none of which is below grade 4 (rapids are graded from 1 to 6). Videos and still photographs are available for purchase, as it is not advisable to take a camera rafting. Bungy jumping is also available for those who enjoy going headfirst off a 111-metre bridge. Various flights are available Light aircraft, helicopter, microlight and ultralight (one has a propeller at the front) all offering wonderful views of the falls. As well as these there are skydiving, horse ridding safari's, elephant riding, canoeing, and there is always a visit to the falls themselves. Videos and still photographs are available for purchase of most activities, and are a great reminder of your adrenalin filled visit to the mighty Victoria Falls and Zambezi River. Post tour accommodation can be organised through Kumuka. |
Accommodation & Center
Details Camping (7 Nights).
We have put a lot of thought and effort into locating the most appropriate type of accommodation for each tour. Overland tours will spend most time in campsites and some time in hotels as it is much more appropriate to the overland style of travel.
