Only 4 hours away by plane, The canary islands are an ideal choice for some winter sailing
Join us for Xmas week or New Year week and let us take care of the festive preparations
Join us later in January or February to relax and get away from it all
Our main base is Lanzarote which is situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. The island is 37 miles (60km) long and 12 miles (20 km) wide, making it the fourth largest island in the Canaries.
Lanzarote enjoys a mild dry climate with average daytime temperatures of 21C in January. Annual rainfall is just 140mm (5.5 inches). Situated in the trade wind belt the wind is predominantly North Easterly and the frequency of gales is low. The islands are not affected by hurricanes.
As with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is Volcanic in origin. Due to the recent eruptions during the 18th and 19th Centuries, many parts of Lanzarote appear to be from another world, often described as 'lunar' or 'Martian', so much so that parts of 'Planet of the Apes' were shot here. The dry climate (and lack of erosion) means that the Volcanic Landscape appears much as it did just after the eruptions.
Despite the Volcanic nature of the island, Lanzarote also has several beautiful white sandy beaches.
Try one of our ‘Relaxed Cruising’ 7 day trips where we sail approximately 3-5 hours per day, and spend the remainder of the time exploring ashore or relaxing on the golden sandy beaches. During a lazy 7 days we can visit the islands of Lanzarote, La Graciosa and Isla de Lobos
Weekly mileage approx 120
Want to sail more miles?
Try our 'Adventure Cruising' trips where in addition to the above we also include a trip to Lanzarote – more miles, overnight sailing and less time on the beach. Weekly mileage approx 250
In addition to this we have 2 new ideas for 2009
Canary Island dash - Ideal to gain miles, 60 mile passages, overnight hours and lots of pilotage, we aim to visit as many places as we can during this 13 day sail, and see each island at least once.
There are 8 inhabited islands in the Canary Islands group, La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma together with a few small uninhabited ones just north of Lanzarote. We intend to ‘see’ them all! With the prevailing winds from the NE, some of our sails will be downwind sprints, and some of them upwind beats. A great mixture of both exhiliarating and demanding sailing combined with time to explore each of these different islands
Explore the Western islands of the Canary Island group. We will spend a week exploring Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro in March
