Snowmobile Adventure
If you want to experience the excitement and exhilaration of traversing snowy landscapes by snowmobile then this is the trip for you! Hidden away in the north-western tip of Swedish Lapland, on the border with Norway, lies a range of mountains that keeps good snow cover until the end of May, allowing us to enjoy the full range of winter activities on offer while benefiting from longer days and warmer weather.
Upon arrival we waste no time getting fitted out into our winter gear, jumping on the snowmobiles and heading up into the mountains and our welcome retreat for the evening, Lakta Mountain Station. The following day we begin our explorations of the ice and snow covered peaks, stopping en route to try our hand at ice fishing. If we are lucky enough to catch something, our guide can cook it over an open fire, although we do bring extra food just in case! Taking to our snowmobiles once more, we speed across the snow to our lodge that will be our base over the coming days.
The following days are left free for you to enjoy the multitude of activities that are available here (all optional). If you're hooked on snowmobiling then you can head off into the mountains again, or, if you prefer something totally different but equally exhilarating, then why not try guiding your own team of husky dogs? There's also the chance to try cross-country skiing and snowshoeing - giving you the opportunity to discover this pristine, snow-covered landscape at a more leisurely pace. |

Itinerary & Highlights
SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS - Among the many highlights featured on this tour, we particularly mention:
MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES Snowmobiling through some of Europe’s most stunning scenery.
ICE FISHING Catch and cook your own lunch.
ARCTIC ADVENTURES Husky safaris, skiing and snowshoeing amidst the mountain vistas of Swedish Lapland
(all optional).
DAY 1. FRIDAY. JOIN TOUR KIRUNA AIRPORT; drive Björkliden, snowmoible to Lakta Mountain Station.
We meet at Kiruna Airport today and then drive to the small town of Björkliden, close to the spectacular setting of Torneträsk Lake to the north of the Arctic Circle. Here we will put on the warm clothing provided before boarding our snowmobiles and riding up to Lakta Mountain Station, where we will overnight (please refer to the ‘Packing for your trip’ section for more details).
Traversing a landscape of quite spectacular majesty we experience one of the last great wilderness areas left in Europe, a land of expansive skies, high mountains and glittering lakes. Our final destination for today is Sweden’s highest station, situated at 1228m, and if the weather is fine, affording us some stunning views of the surrounding vistas and the 70km long Torneträsk Lake.
DAY 2. AM. SNOWMOBILING THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS; PM continue to Gammelgården.
Our day begins with an exploration of the area around Lakta, enjoying the crisp, clear mountain air and the breathtaking views across this pristine wilderness. We aim to cover around 40km today, including a stop for lunch and a chance to try our hand at ice fishing, before reaching our destination for today, the Gammelgården Ski Lodge overlooking the clear waters of Lake Torne.
The history and tradition of Gammelgården dates back nearly a hundred years, from just after the opening up of the Malmbanan railway to Narvik – Europe’s most northerly train line, which runs from the Bothnian Gulf to the Atlantic, through some of the most remote and previously unexplored regions of the country. Converted from an old navvy shack, the beautiful timber interiors of the
lodge presents us with a warm and cosy ambience and a welcome respite at the end of a day’s ride. We recommend trying the locally made waffles, they are legendary! This evening our tour leader will leave us in the hands of the staff at the lodge and the local specialist guides who run the optional activities, returning on Day 5 to take us back to the airport.
DAYS 3 & 4. FREE FOR OPTIONAL SNOW-BASED EXPERIENCES
The next two days have been left free to enjoy as you wish, with a number of optional activities available from the lodge. For those addicted to the snowmobiles there will be ample opportunities to continue exploring the snow covered terrains of these mountain landscapes. Alternatively you may prefer to try guiding a team of huskies through the Swedish wilderness on a dog sled safari. A truly unique way to view this remarkable landscape, the dogsled has long been a traditional form of transport in these icy regions. Adapted to the terrain and conditions over which it would travel the construction of each sled was very much an individual creation. Held together by skin straps that ensured it remained flexible over the uneven terrain, the sled was pulled by teams of up to 10 dogs and still remains the most enthralling way to travel.
If you want to try something new then why not give crosscountry skiing a go? Forget the image you have of the winter Olympics where super-fit men and women pound through the snow, cross-country skiing is actually very easy to pick up and compared to walking in snow it is a far more efficient way to travel and expends far less energy. Another great way to explore this beautiful region is by snowshoe and again no previous experience is required.
For those of you searching for something a little more demanding then the nearby skislopes have a wide range of runs to cater for all levels, without the rasmataz of the ski resorts in France or Switzerland, this may be the perfect opportunity to learn to ski or rediscover the buzz of feeling the wind in your hair as you glide down, gracefully or otherwise!
DAY 5. TUESDAY. TOUR ENDS KIRUNA AIRPORT
Taking a charter bus back to Kiruna today our tour ends on arrival at the airport. |
