Steppes of Genghis Khan
Beijing to the Gobi Desert
Before arriving in Mongolia you'll spend two nights in Beijing; plenty of time to visit the Temple of Heaven, Tianamen Square and of course the fabled Forbidden City. After a day in Ulaanbaatar, you begin your overland journey south to the Gobi Desert, where you'll get truly off the beaten track and spend your first nights in a ger tent. On your journey you'll explore the year-round ice formations of Yol Canyon and the fossilised dinosaur remains at the Flaming Cliffs.
Across the Steppe
The wild interior of Mongolia is home to the nomads and for many the highlight of this adventure will be two days spent in their company, learning and taking part in traditional activities such as ger building, horse riding, making cheese and even a little Mongolian vodka! Your return journey to Ulaanbaatar is via the Mongol Els sand dunes and the site of Genghis Khan's ancient stronghold of Karakorum.
Naadam Festival
Held annually, the Naadam Festival is one of Mongolia's cultural highlights. The three national sports of archery, wrestling and horse racing are showcased here in a blur of passion, skill and colour. Our Naadam departures follow a longer 17 day itinerary with two full days at the festival. See Trip Dossier for details.
