The island was named after a Genoese navigator called Lancelotto Malocello who arrived on the island during the second half of the XIV century opening the way to successive expeditions of French, British and Spanish sailors and merchants. Previously the isles were known as the Fortunate Islands.
Lanzarote main surfing is situated in Famara on the west coast. The small surfing resort of Famara is 1, 500 metres of beautiful beach with magnificent backdrop of volcanic mountains and has become a Surfers' paradise, although retaining its pure innocents and simplicity.
You will find you are in the most tranquil of surroundings with very little night life entertainment on offer, but only a short taxi drive across the island you can find nightlife in the busy resort of Puerto del Carmen. The Volcanic island has produced a surreal yet beautiful red landscape and is part of the World Biosphere, Famara itself has been left in its natural state. Playa de Famara is considered by many to be its most beautiful surfing beaches in Europe.

During the winter time bigger swells travel down from the North Atlantic and generate solid surf along the the reef breaks on the north shore. During the summer the waves are much smaller, but break everyday thanks to a light trade wind.

The Xoxxi surf school has been operating in Lanzarote since 1996 under the guidance of international professional surf coach Tim Jones. The average water temperature is between 20-23 °C and air temperature is between 20-25 °C, which allows us to surf almost every day. (These are the temperatures in winter, in summer it gets even hotter!) If you are starting out for the first time then the beach of Famara will be your first port of call. This massive sandy beach stretches along some of the most breath-taking volcanic landscape. Close to the apartment, the famous waves of La Santa, El Quemao and San Juan will test any budding surfer.
The surf school in Lanzarote is of such high quality and is the only school in the canary islands to be awarded as the best and highest standard of surf school. You will be coached for five days. If you have surfed before you can be coached on turns, generating speed, wave selection and much more. The school is equipped with the latest boards and wetsuits to match the high standard of surf coaching. This includes 7' - 9' soft boards, 7'6" - 10' Bic boards and the latest range of Surftech and custom shortboards. Surf coaching takes place from 10.30am until 4pm.
