The trek along the Inca Trail, the secret road that led from Cuzco through mountains and jungle to the lost city of Machu Picchu, is without doubt the best way to approach this magnificent ruin. In this itinerary we have added an extra mountain dimension before joining the classic route: the first few days are high, wild and remote, following a trail which skirts many of the great peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba.

For acclimatisation and contrast we explore beautiful Cuzco and the nearby Sacred Valley.

Itinerary & Highlights

Day 1 - Fly to Lima.

Day 2 - Fly to Cuzco; afternoon walking exploration of Cuzco.

Day 3 - Full-day walking tour of the ruins above the city.

Day 4 - Free day in Cuzco to relax and acclimatise before trek.

Day 5 - Drive to trek start point at Mollepata.

Day 6/8 - Trek around Salcantay and over Inca Chiriasqa Pass.

Day 9 - Join classic Inca Trail and cross Dead Woman Pass.

Day 10 - Over second pass to ruins of Sayajmarca and Phuyupatamarca.

Day 11 - Down Inca steps to Winay Wayna and Machu Picchu.

Day 12 - Visit the ruins of Machu Picchu, then by train to Sacred Valley.

Day 13 - Explore Sacred Valley ruins of Ollantaytambo and Pisac; return to Cuzco.

Day 14 - Free time to relax in Cuzco or optional rafting or other activities and tours.

Day 15 - Fly to Lima; city tour. Depart.

Day 16 - Arrive London.

Accommodation & Centre Details

7 nights hotels, 7 nights camping.

Standard Hotel, Lodge or Gite – no-frills hotel, usually with twin rooms and en suite facilities. Service and amenities are generally adequate.

Full-service Camping – two person tents sometimes in a private or public campsite that contains a communal ablutions block and other amenities and sometimes in a wild camp with toilet tents and mess tent or dining equipment provided. All camp chores are done for you from erecting / dismantling of your tent, to cooking & washing up.

Single Rooms – Single rooms can be booked at the supplement specified in the brochure or on the website. These are then guaranteed and non-refundable.
