The Lost City of Choquequirao
This trek heads for Choquequirao, one of the best-preserved Inca cities and to where the Inca royalty fled following the Spanish conquest. The shrines and highways throughout the region were maintained until 1572 when the Conquistadors finally reached this remote refuge of the surviving Manco Inca and put an end to the dynasty.
While the route is dominated by the 6000m peaks of Nevados Sacsayroyac and Pumasillo, there is tremendous diversity as we travel up from the cloud forest environment below Machu Picchu, cross the spine of the range, descend to the spectacular canyon of the Apurimac river, and finally climb out into the highlands again.

Day 1 - Fly to Lima.
Day 2 - Fly to Cuzco; walking tour of city.
Day 3 - Train to Machu Picchu; stay overnight.
Day 4 - Return by train to Ollantaytambo, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Day 5 - Drive over the dramatic Malaga Pass to north of Nevado Veronica; camp at Huancacalle (3000m).
Day 6 - Hike to Inca ruins of Vitcos and Nusta Ispana.
Day 7 - Ascend Choquetecarpo Pass (4560m).
Day 8 - Trek to hamlet of Yanama amidst magnificent mountain scenery.
Day 9 - Spectacular route over Mina Victoria pass, descend to Rio Blanco.
Day 10 - Steep ascent to Choquequirao pass (3215m) then descend into the ruins of Choquequirao (3100m).
Day 11 - Full day exploring the site and its surroundings.
Day 12 - Morning visit the ruins; descend to camp near the mighty Apurimac River.
Day 13 - Trek to Capuliyoc Pass. Return to Cuzco via Inca ritual site at Sayhuite.
Day 14 - Free day in Cuzco.
Day 15 - Fly to Lima; depart.

Comfortable Hotel, Lodge or Gite – twin rooms with en suite facilities, reliable electricity and water supply, good service and some added amenities.
Standard Hotel, Lodge or Gite – no-frills hotel, usually with twin rooms and en suite facilities. Service and amenities are generally adequate.
Basic Hotel, Lodge or Gite, Mountain Hut, Village House – Can be communal, often consisting of just a bed and shared facilities. Bed linen not normally provided. Running water, toilets and electricity may be inconsistent or non-existent. Cleanliness is not always assured.
Comfortable Camping – permanent tented campsites, which generally offer walk-in tents, en suite facilities and proper beds, may have added amenities.
Full-service Camping – two person tents sometimes in a private or public campsite that contains a communal ablutions block and other amenities and sometimes in a wild camp with toilet tents and mess tent or dining equipment provided. All camp chores are done for you from erecting / dismantling of your tent, to cooking & washing up.
Participatory or Basic Camping – normally in two person tents, although sometimes fixed communal tents are used. Organised
campsites if used may only have basic facilities. Wild camps may have no facilities provided. Camp chores are performed by the group, although advice and help is given by our staff.
Single Rooms – Single rooms can be booked at the supplement specified in the brochure or on the website. These are then guaranteed and non-refundable. |
