Trans Africa 40 weeks

An incredible overland journey from the UK to Cairo, via Cape Town and Nairobi

Our Trans Africa trip is a true Africa overland travel expedition. And as with any travel to West Africa and central Africa, you must expect a high degree of hardship: digging the truck out of mud, sand matting in the Sahara, and still be ready to participate in the day to day activities such as buying food, cooking and gathering fire wood. You will experience extremes of climate from the heat of the desert, to torrential downpours in the jungles. We will often be isolated from the rest of the world, away from doctors and telephones, and at times food and water supplies will be limited.
But it's all worth it!

We have two specialist 4x4 & 6x4 vehicles which are used solely for the Trans Africa Expedition. They are equipped with our usual high range of equipment and comprehensive range of spare parts.

We believe all this will make life easier and safer whilst 'on the road' and add to the enjoyment of the African overland travel expedition.

Days 1 to 35

* Fly from UK to Gibraltar to meet the expedition vehicle.

Morocco

* Chefchaouen - stroll through this idyllic & picturesque hillside town.
* Roman ruins of Volubillis.
* Fez - guided tour of this fortress city & its amazing bazaar.
* Todra Gorge - amazing scenery & walks.
* Marrakech - visit the world famous Jema el Fna square.

Mauritania

* Cross the vast Sahara Desert.
* Parc d'Arguin - renowned for its bird & sea life.

Mali, Bamako (the capital)

* Mopti & Djenne - visit one of the largest & oldest mud buildings in the world.
* Bandiagara Escarpment & Dogon Villages - guided two day hike learning about the Dogons beliefs & way of life.

Days 36 to 63

Burkina Faso

* Ougadougou - visit some great bars & listen to some of the best music in West Africa.

Ghana

* Mole Nat. Park - game walk to spot the numerous elephants.
* Kakum National Park
* Accra - relax on palm-fringed beaches.

Days 64 to 66

* A couple of free days on the beaches near Accra.

Days 67 to 95

Togo & Benin

* Visit a fetish market to see the still thriving religion of Voodoo.
* Ganvie Stilted Village - visit a village built on bamboo stilts on Lake Nakoue.

Nigeria

* Abuja - a jumping, hectic city with vibrant nightlife & bars.

Cameroon

* Buea - climb Mt Cameroon or relax on the beach at Limbe.

Days 96 to 162

Gabon, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola

* Travel through some of the densest jungles, toughest terrains and some of the most challenging roads we will encounter on the whole trip.

Namibia

* Windhoek, the modern capital.

South Africa

* Cango Calcite Caves, Little Karoo & Outeniqua Mountains
* Tsitsikamma Forest - mountain biking, ziplining, plus the worlds highest bungy jump.
* Cape Agulhas - Africa's most southerly point.
* Cape Town

Days 163 to 165

* Cape Town - Free time in Cape Town to experience the city - Robben Is. prison tour, shark diving, Table Mountain, great nightlife & much more.

Days 166 to 205

Namibia

* Fish River Canyon, Sossusvlei Sand Dunes & Namib-Naukluft Park.
* Swakopmund - quad biking, dune sledding & buggies, tandem sky diving & more!
* Cape Cross Seal Colony.
* Cheetah park - an up close experience with these amazing cats.
* Etosha Nat. Park - game drive by day & relax at floodlit water holes by night to spot rhino, elephant, giraffe, lion & leopard.

Botswana

* Okavango Delta - 2 day mokoro boat trip.

Zimbabwe

* Victoria Falls - whitewater rafting, Flight of Angels, gorge swing, abseil, bungy jump & much more!
* Matobo Nat. Park - game walks to spot Black Rhino.
* Great Zimbabwe Ruins.
* Antelope Park - a private game ranch - game viewing on elephant & horseback or walk with Lion Cubs!

Mozambique & Malawi

* Lake Malawi - windsurf, scuba dive, horse riding, school visit & craft markets.

Tanzania

* Mikumi Nat. Park - spot giraffe, zebra, elephant & buffalo from the roadside.
* Dar Es Salaam - bbq on the Indian Ocean coast.

Days 206 to 234

Zanzibar Island. - Stone Town & spice tour, amazing beaches, swim with dolphins, snorkel or scuba dive.

* Ngorongoro Crater Reserve - lion, giraffe, elephant, hippos, flamingos, zebra & gazelle.
* Serengeti Nat. Park - lion, wildebeest, giraffe, elephant, hippo, gazelle, cheetah & leopard.

Rwanda

* Mountain Gorillas - trek to see these amazing creatures, the closest species related to man.

Uganda

* Lake Victoria - visit a Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Rehabilitation centre.
* Jinja, Bujagali Falls - whitewater rafting & quad biking.

Kenya

* Lake Nakuru - spot hordes of wildlife, as well as millions of pink flamingos.
* Crater Lake Game Sanctuary or Hells Gate Nat. Park - cycle or walk through these parks.
* Elsamere - visit the home of Joy Adamson of Born Free fame.
* Nairobi

Days 235 to 237

* Free time in Nairobi, visit Langata Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National park, or an Elephant orphanage.

Days 238 to 280

* East African Rift Valley & arduous northern Kenyan roads.

Ethiopia

* Blue Nile Gorge
* Bahir Dar - take a tour to the 12th century rock hewn churches of Lalibela.
* Gondar - take a tour to the holy city of Axum.

Sudan

* Khartoum, Hamed al Nil Tomb - visit the camel market or take a boat trip on the Nile River.
* Pyramids at Meroe & the temples at Naqa.
* Wadi Halfa - catch the ferry across Lake Nasser.

Egypt

* Aswan, Abu Simbel - visit the great stone monuments of the Sun Temple.
* Felucca trip - 2 days on the Nile River to Edfu & Kom Ombo.
* Luxor - tour to the Valley of Kings & Queens, visit Karnak & Luxor Temples.
* Western Desert - visit several oases (hire a desert guide & camels & head out to explore, walk through the lanes of mud houses at the Citadel of Mut).
* Cairo - 1 day tour of Pyramids & Sphinx at Giza & Egyptian History Museum.
* Last night trip party!
