Trekking The Jewel of the Andes

When we were looking for a new trekking route in Bolivia, we didn't realise we were going to find what we and our local guides believe to be the best mountain trek in South America.

Apolobamba National Park, Ulla Ulla Vicuña Reserve and Madidi National Park together form one huge protected area which covers all of the ecological zones in the Andes and the Amazon: from the high glaciated mountains down to the Amazon rain forest.

This route starts in the remote and isolated mountains to the north of the small town of Pelechuco, then descends down through the cloud forest of the upper Madidi National Park, before climbing again to the mountains on the western side of the Apolobamba mountain range. The whole expedition ends at Curva, the capital of the Callawayas. This journey will give you a deep insight into Bolivia's culture while you trek in the remote magnificence of the largest protected area in South America.

Along the way, you'll visit several ancient pre-Hispanic ruins and meet people from some of Bolivia's original ethnic groups: the Aymaras around Titicaca, the Quechuas in the northern Apolobamba range and the Callawayas on its southern end, all of whom have a lifestyle unchanged in centuries.

The whole area is very sparsely populated, the nature is pristine and your chances of spotting wild animals are far more realistic than anywhere else in the Andes: condors, dozens of bird species, lots of vizcachas (Andean marmot), and with some luck, a spectacled bear, coyotes, deer, foxes and even the elusive pumas.

Itinerary & Highlights
Day 1 Fly from the UK to La Paz, arriving the following day.

Day 2 Arrive La Paz, flying in over the Andes to the highest international airport in the world at 4000 metres.

Days 3-5 The next few days are an ideal opportunity to acclimatize to the altitude with a fascinating exploration of the reed islands of Lake Titicaca. Sleep under the stars of the Southern Hemisphere with views to the Cordillera Real.

Days 6-13 The trek in the Cordillera Apolobamba begins in the Quechua village of Peluchuco where our local guides will lead us through the cloud forest on pre-Columbian trails. Over the next few days we'll pass through a series of hidden valleys, with incredible views to the highest peaks, many of which are unclimbed. We will meet local people, including the shy Mollo Indians, and head over passes higher than 4000 metres. On day 12, we will hit our highest pass at 5300 metres before heading downhill for a long earned rest.

Day 14 Rest day in Suchez.

Day 15-19 Altanari to Curva. Staying high, we pass through Ulla Ulla Vicuña reserve and into an even wilder and more spectacular landscape. Never dropping below 4500 metres, we trek through valleys dotted with llama and alpacas and over passes giving views to the Illampu massif and the Cordillera Real. Eventually, we descend to the town of Curva, populated by Callawaya Indians.

Day 20 Return to La Paz.

Day 21 A final day to explore the fascinating city of La Paz.

Day 22 Depart Bolivia.

Day 23 Arrive UK.

Accommodation & Center Details
Accommodation on this trip is mostly camping as we trek through the wilderness. However, at either end of our trek, we will stay in comfortable hotels.

To access the wildest mountain, jungle and desert regions in Bolivia, it is essential to camp wild. However, wild does not need to mean basic. All of our campsites come fully equipped with spacious two person tents, comfortable Thermarests and a few individual touches. In addition, you will be fully supported with a mess/dining tent, kitchen tent and toilet tent. Our philosophy is very much “adventures in style”, and Bolivia is no exception.
