Windsurfing Holiday El Medano, Tenerife

Tenerife can offer one of the best all round holidays. 360 days of sunshine a year and 260 days of wind (stronger than force 4)!! El Medano is located in the shadow of Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain. The best beaches are dotted around this southern coast. A short drive up the volcano takes you from dry scrubland, through alpine forests, cactus fields, through the ring of clouds and out into the lunar landscape at the top. The peak can be reached by cable car and for 4 or 5 months of the year is snow capped. You will also notice the distinct sulphur smell of the volcano 'breathing'. Less than an hours drive to the north is where all the rain hits Tenerife. Here the lush green vegetation extends right up the mountain sides. The original fishing village of El Medano has developed in an ad hoc manner in a style of it's own, completely different to the commercial resorts to the west. From the pleasant town square you can walk along the beach or into the typical narrow streets. There are many bars and restaurants to choose from and the atmosphere is very multi-national.

El Medano has two bays and the popular North bay can offer some excellent wave riding and jumping as well as bump & jump conditions. There are 3 main sailing areas in the North bay. Closest to the Windsurf Centre is a large area of non-breaking swell, ideal for bump and jump sailing. A little downwind is the beach of El Cabezo with cross onshore wind and waves normally 1 - 2 metres, occasionally 3m+ on big days. This is the world cup venue and the standard of windsurfing here is very high. Expect to see all the latest manoeuvres. If the conditions are right there can be perfect cross shore and good waves off the harbour wall at El Molle. The launch varies depending on the state of the tide. At low tide it is all sandy, at high, a mixture of sand and rocks. To sail in the North bay you should be able to waterstart although, except in rare extreme conditions, it is not difficult.

The South bay at El Medano has more moderate sailing and shorebreak with a cross shore wind and average swells up to 1 metre (max 2 metres). The launch here is sandy slowly shelving to deep water. Sailing outside of the bay is not advisable due to strong currents and swells.

The centre is equipped with the latest Fanatic and Arrows wave and slalom kit. It's location at Hotel Atlantic Playa, is perfect for sailing in the North bay. Launch on the beach in front of the centre where the waves are smaller and one gybe downwind and you're in the impact zone. Or stay upwind for bump & jump sailing. The centre also has surf boards, body board, ocean kayaks and mountain bikes for rent. Year round the centre also runs mountain bike tours into the stunning interior of the island. Prices are discounted if you have rented windsurf kit.

Accommodation Details

Cabezo Apartments:-
Cabezo Apartments are ideally located almost on the beach (2 minutes from the centre) and only 10 minutes walk from the centre of El Medano. The studios, one-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom apartments are comfortably furnished and have full self-catering facilities. They have terraces or balconies and all face the sea.

Medano Hotel:-
One of the first hotels to be built in El Medano, it has prime position on the south beach. The hotel has a faded charm and is popular with an older clientele, who have returned year after year. It has a plunge pool, panoramic restaurant, four sun terraces and cafe bar. All rooms have seaview, TV, safe and private bathroom. Rooms with balcony are available on request only. Alternatively, larger superior rooms with balcony can be reserved at a supplement.
