Windsurfing Holiday Sal
For windsurfing holidays the Cape Verde islands are great. The Cape Verde islands are a small archipelago in the Atlantic, 1,500km south of the Canary Islands and approx. 450 km off the West coast of Africa in the trade wind belt. Due to their postion within this winter trade wind belt the Cape Verde Islands boast near perfect windsurfing conditions from October to June. The Island of Sal, with the airport, has been a popular windsurfing haven for years. It's a barren island but everyone who comes here falls under the spell of its mysterious charm and plans to return.

PLANET WINDSURFING
Planet Windsurfing offer two stations in Sal. The first is uniquely located right infront of their hotel (the Leme Bedje) at the top of the main beach area. As this area is slightly protected by the top bay area the swell is at its lowest, with a small shore break. Also you will find few obstructions to the cross shore wind, which is at its cleanest here coming over the flat terrain just behind the centre. The launch has a number of stones and rocks so boots are essential. The centre staff are always available to help with entry and exit if you are unsure of the conditions. For beginners you have use of a kayak to get you over the shorebreak into flatter water, where you instructor will meet you with your board.
The second centre is in the middle of the main beach area. In front of the centre the water can be a little choppy with a slight shore break. If the shore break becomes too strong the team will help you overcome this obstacle. Sail past the jetty from here, in between a number of small fishing boats, and you will enter the speed track, where you can blast away to your heart content or jibe through the turquoise water; further out there is a swell for the wave novice. The cross-off shore wind or side shore wind from the left makes for effortless up wind sailing in order to reach the various sections of the beach.
Planet Windsurfing offer organised trips to the wavesailing spots such as Algodeiro and Caleta Funda once or twice a week depending on demand. Alternatively, you can take their Wave Package*, which allows you to take a wave board and rig from the station and sail at any wave spot in the area. Local pick-ups provide transfers to the different spots for around E10.00 - 20.00 per day or you can hire a 4 X 4 car/jeep.
CLUB MISTRAL
The Club Mistral centre is located to the right of the Hotel Morabeza at the downwind end of the bay. In front of the centre the water is choppy with a shorebreak. If the shorebreak becomes too strong the team will help you manoeuvre your kit out to flatter water.
As with the Planet Windsurfing centre 2, you sail past the jetty from here, in between a number of small fishing boats, and you will enter the speed track, where you can blast away to your heart content or jibe through the turquoise water; further out there is a swell for the wave novice. LEME BEDJE HOTEL
Located on the beachfront in a quiet location, the Leme Bedje is a friendly hotel with a very relaxed atmosphere. Most importantly it is positioned directly behind the best windsurfing spot in Santa Maria.
The standard rooms are simply furnished, with private facilities and ceiling fan. Alternatively, there are bungalow style rooms with TV, fridge and small terrace. Also for families or small groups there are one and two bedroom apartments. There is a small pool and the combined snackbar/restaurant offers evening meals five days a week and is a popular spot for a sundowner after a long day on the water.
MORABEZA HOTEL
This charming hotel is conveniently located just behind the second Planet Windsurfing station on the other side of the bay to Leme Bedje. There is a reasonably sized swimming pool set in a well presented patio area with bar/snack area.
The rooms have a shower, ceiling fan, TV fridge, balcony, some of which have sea views (at a supplement). There are also holiday apartments for families with up to two children.
ODJO DEL AQUA HOTEL
With it's stunning location right on the waters edge, this hotel offers a high standard of service and probably the best views of any in Santa Maria.
The small pool is located on a tropical terrace overlooking the bay and the restaurant offers some of the best food on the island. Live music is also offered on some evenings in the nautical cellar bar. All rooms are furnished to a high standard, with ensuite facilities, fan, TV, fridge, phone and balcony. Standard rooms are right on the pool, and larger rooms are located on the first floor. Family rooms with a connecting door are also available. The 15 minute walk to the centre is well worth it for the views alone!
NOVORIZONTE HOTEL
Directly behind the Mistral Centre, the Novorizonte is a bungalow-style complex with simple, comfortably furnished rooms, which offer a more relaxed feel than your normal hotel. Located in the pleasant gardens, all rooms have ensuite facilities, air-conditioning, hairdryer, fridge, satellite TV, phone and a private terrace.
The hotel has a saltwater pool and restaurant, and you may also use the facilities of the Belorizonte Hotel next door. These include two further pools (one freshwater and one saltwater), a tennis court, games room, table tennis, bar and restaurant. However, there a choice or restaurants just a few minutes walk away or in Santa Maria centre (15 minutes walk). |
