Windsurfing Holiday Sotavento

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canaries although one of the least developed. You arrive at the airport in Puerto Rosario, and head to Sotavento in the South (about 1.5 hours).

The Canary Islands offer excellent value for money and are easily reached, by several charter flights a week, with a short 3 hour flight.

The spot:-
Fuerteventura offers a variety of conditioned depending on the time of year and location; from super flat shallow lagoons to full on wave sailing spots. We know this area extremely well so please call for a personal account and advice on suitability.

Located on miles of stunning white sand beaches in the south of the island, as in the north Sotavento is a relatively undeveloped area of the Canaries. For windsurfers this is viewed as one of the windiest places in the world, with the Windsurf World Cup held here for the past 18 years. In this secluded spot the 4* Sol Gorriones hotel holds prime position overlooking the whole area.

Windsurfing Safaris: There are many other more secluded spots all around the island (including some awesome wave sailing) that are best accessed on a safari. You can join groups of up to 6 windsurfers of similar standard, and be taken by 4x4 to a new spot each day. For the more adventurous this is an excellent way to get the very best from the island.

Itinerary / Highlights

Rene Egli has two centres in Sotavento, which are two miles apart, each with its own individual character. These centres have the largest selection of kit that we have seen anywhere in the world! With 300 of the latest F2 and JP boards and 1000 Neil pryde rigs, we can reserve you a board at either centre, with the option to move between centres, subject to availability. The centre shuttle bus connects the two centres, which is free of charge with your board rental. Centre I is located directly in the Sotavento wind funnel, so there is a protected palm garden for a relaxing rest inbetween sessions or some refreshment at the bar. Both centres are covered by watchtowers and rescue boats. A full instruction programme frpm beginner, through waterstart to waveriding moves are available with VDWS approved instructors. It is also possible to opt for combined windsurf/kitesurf rental (Licence required for kitesurf rental - possible to obtain on-site).

Centre II is ideally situated near the large sand dunes still within the Sotavento wind funnel. The spot is equally suitable for beginners and advanced windsurfers. In the large shallow lagoon beginners can improve in dead flat water conditions, while the experienced surfers can jump and ride in 1 - 2 metre breakers on the sand bars in front of the lagoon. The lagoon comes and goes with high tide every six hours. All beginner and refresher courses are run from Centre II. The station is located at the water's edge, complete with Spanish-run restaurant and bar.

The Wind:-
There are no compulsory inoculations if travelling from the UK but we recommend to check with your GP for the latest advice.

The swells which bring the best waves are caused by depressions in the Atlantic which are more prevalent in Winter.

The Windsurfing
Fuerteventura offers windsurfers the opportunity to sail in a whole variety of conditions. The summer gives the best winds, the winter the best waves.

Strong winds and water conditions from flat up to 2 metre waves make Sotavento a perfect spot for freestylers, racers and kiters. The predominant wind direction is a deflected North/East offshore wind. In the autumn, winter and spring the wind can also blow onshore from the East/South. Located on the beautiful white sand beach with crystal-clear turquoise water for miles the two Rene Egli centers offer dream conditions for all levels from beginner to advanced

Sol Gorriones (All Inclusive)
The 4 star Hotel Sol Gorriones is located in a quiet area right on the mile long of beach at Sotavento. It is protected from the strong wind, and is just a stone's throw away from the Rene Egli Centre 1.

Playa Esmeralda
There is an outdoor freshwater pool and an indoor heated pool, along with a tennis court, billiard room, children's playground, diving centre and children's mini-club.

Apartment Casa Bella
Privately owned luxury 1 and 2-bedroom apartment located in the best beachfront location in Sotavento Costa Calma. The 15 mile long, golden sandy beach is right outside your door, with stunning views from your own private terrace. The 1 bedroom apartment has full far reaching seaviews and the 2 bedroom has limited seaviews.

Paraiso Apartments
These brand new apartments located on the hill directly above the Rene Egli centre have definitely got the most stunning location in Sotovento/Costa Calma. You can enjoy the quietness of the location as there are no other buildings nearby but are just 10 minutes walk from local amenities including supermarkets, shops etc. There is a heated swimming pool and private underground garage.
