Windsurfing Holiday Tarifa
Tarifa is great for windsurfing, it is perched on the southern tip of Spain, looking towards Africa just a few miles across the Straits of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. The town itself is clustered around the narrow streets and has spread outside the old walls. Surf shops line the road into town from the beach and it is clear that most of the visitors are windsurfers. It is a destination that is most suitable for intermediate sailors or for those wishing to combine windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Club Mistral has 2 bases in Tarifa. The centre at Rancho Valdevaqueros is right on the large sandy beach of Casa de Porro (Las Dunas) where the wind is often strongest. Launching is straight-forward in both Levante and Poniente, and the protected bay provides optimum conditions for all skill levels. The shorebreak can be stronger in Autumn if the wind is onshore. It is only a short walk from Hotel 100% Fun and is stocked with the latest Mistral boards and North rigs. The centre closes from November to March.
The other centre is at the Hurricane Hotel which is a couple of kilometres towards town. The water here is flat to choppy in summer, with biggish waves (2 metres) from autumn to spring. There is a shorebreak when the wind is onshore. The wind here is shadowed for the first 50 metres, but after that sailing in the levante is superb. Depending on the tide, there may be stones/rocks when launching and exiting. There are no rocks or reefs further out. The centre is open all year, with rental only in January and February.

When selecting hotel accommodation in Tarifa, the main thing to consider is whether to be in town and close to the bars or close to the beach and the wind and kitesurfing. If you stay in Tarifa town (Canas Apartments & Casa Amarilla) you will not need to drive (or take taxis) in the evenings. During the day you will need to drive to the beach. If you stay at Hotel 100% Fun, you can walk to the beach and Club Mistral at Las Dunas. It is 8km to town and so transport is needed to get there. In July and August there is a regular bus into Tarifa that stops at all the hotels and camp sites.
HOTEL 100% FUN
Hotel 100% Fun is run for windsurfers by windsurfers. This popular hotel is located close to the beach about 8km from Tarifa town. It is set in lush tropical gardens with gurgling fountains and a swimming pool. All rooms are individually and tastefully decorated in Polynesian style. This unique and extremely friendly hotel has often been used for film productions and is highly recommended by many hotel guide books. On site you will find a good surf shop and great Mexican food in the tropical garden restaurant.
LAS CANAS APARTMENTS
Las Canas Apartments are situated 50m from the beach and 500m from the town centre. The apartments are built around a small swimming pool with well kept gardens and seaviews.There are various 2 and 3 bedroom units offering the flexibility for different sized groups. They have fully equipped kitchens including washing machine and microwaves. The upper storeys have some wonderful views towards the sea. This is a perfect location for those who want to be in a quieter area close to town.
AFRICA SUITE
Situated in the old part of Tarifa town, Africa Suite can be booked as a two bedroom apartment or a seperate studio and one bedroom apartment. The one bedroom apartment is on the ground and first floor and has a kitchen with washing machine, dining area and bathroom. The studio apartment has a seperate entrance and is on the top floor with far reaching views across Tarifa to the sea. The studio does not have a kitchen.
SALON ARABE
Salon Arabe is a traditional Spanish style apartment in Tarifa old town. Decorated with a Moroccan feel this is a real home from home. On two floors the apartment has two bedrooms, kitchen with washing machine, living/dining room, satellite TV and it\'s own private roof terrace with amazing views across the town to the sea. The perfect spot for a sundowner!
CASA PADRE FELIX
Located next door to the church in the centre of Tarifa old town, these newly renovated apartments could not be more central. Studios, one bedroom apartments with sofa bed and a three bedroom apartment with roof terrace are available here. All have a full kitchen and private bathroom (two bathrooms in the three bedroom). |
