A Destination for All Seasons
At first, it might sound a bit strange to put adventure holiday and Slovenia in the same sentence. However, before you write it off, consider this- Slovenia is the only European country that can offer you the Alps and the Mediterranean. Slovenia is an all season, all terrain destination, perfect for anyone looking to take an active break.
If you are aquatically inclined, Slovenia will keep you busy. Head to the well-known River Soča or another of Slovenia’s many rivers to ride the rapids. Whitewater rafting tours will take you through beautiful valleys as well as give you that adrenaline kick. The rivers are also great for hydrospeeding, or riverboarding. It’s definitely a way to get “close” to the river. All you need for hydrospeeding is yourself, a small board, and a pair of flippers (bravery helps as well). Less intimidating options include canoeing and kayaking, and of course, swimming. If you’d like to enjoy the rivers in a less taxing manner, a nice, low-speed option is old style rafting. Way back when, timber rafting along Slovenia’s rivers and lakes was a major form of transportation. Now, it’s not so much a way to get from place to place as a way to leisurely take in the sights, including the lovely views of the rolling countryside. When you’re ready for some more action, make for the sea or Lake Ptuj for a little water skiing or wakeboarding.
If you decide to visit Slovenia in the colder winter months, chances are you won’t be riding the in the wake of a motorboat. Luckily Slovenia has more than its share of fun winter sports. There is the usual skiing and snowboarding, with plenty of ski schools around to help you brush up on those turns. Cross-country skiing and ski touring will give you a chance to really admire the snowy surroundings, whether forest or glade. A particularly enticing area is the valley of Logarska Dolina, found in Slovenia’s Solčavsko area. For a different form of adventure, grab a toboggan. Night tobogganing is especially fun, no matter your age; it’s hard to beat the thrill of gliding down a snowy trail under the light of trailside torches.
Aside from snow-based activity, Slovenia’s terrain is well equipped for a day (or days) of hiking with a large selection of trails to choose from. Cycling and horseback riding are available as well. In the fall months, these options are especially pleasant ways to break a sweat while enjoying the colorful foliage.
Accommodation options in Slovenia vary from hotel to hostel to mountain lodge or cabin. If looking for a place to relax achy muscles after a busy day, there are Slovenia hotels within health resorts that offer access to thermal spas. Thermal spas are a big draw for the country, and there are plenty to be found around Slovenia. A day of outdoor activity followed by a visit to a thermal spa? Definitely the perfect holiday combination of exploration and relaxation. Bringing together nature, sport, and beauty is something you will find Slovenia does very well.
