A True Water World: The Cape Verde Islands
Beautiful beaches and underwater adventure will highlight your trip to the lovely Cape Verde Islands. Located in the middle of the Atlantic, off the west coast of Africa, the Islands are not just three or four islands, but ten islands and five islets, to be precise. You can leave your bulky jumpers at home as Cape Verde weather is what one can only describe as tropical. The best respite you’ll get from the heat will be December through March, when temperatures will be their “coolest”- but note, temperatures rarely drop below 68˚ Fahrenheit.
Cape Verde’s beautiful beaches inspire lots of water-bred activity. Sunbathing and casual swimming are enjoyable, but for those looking for more thrill on their holiday break, Cape Verde will not let you down. Windsurfing is one of the archipelago’s most popular sports, especially on the Island of Sal. If you’re a seasoned wind surfer, why not take on the waves at Punta Preta, found on the west side of Sal. Here you can navigate massive waves, upwards of 8 feet, as they crash onto the shore. Kite surfing is another option for the adventurous traveler in search of an extreme sport fix. There’s no rush quite like the one you get while holding on for dear life as the wind pulls you along the water’s surface, or so I’ve been told- still working on that whole balance thing. Diving is also hugely popular off the Islands’ shores. Underwater is a whole different world, with wrecks and caves full of fishy locals to explore. Always dreamed of swimming with sharks? Here, it can become a reality with frequent cat shark sightings as well as tiger and hammer-head sharks taking up underwater residence.
For those who prefer a bit of dry land, hiking and walking are great ways to take in Cape Verde. Whether the craggy peaks or hilly trails, there are plenty of options for all levels and interests.
When it comes to accommodation, the increase in tourism has seen more options pop up on the Islands. Cape Verde hotels range from beachfront villas to more rugged and less expensive hotels. It depends on your budget and your interests but you’ll find the most options in the most frequented areas, like the tourist popular Santa Maria on the Island of Sal. So go ahead, find your own adventure in the Cape Verde Islands.
