Adventure in Alberta
Adventure in Alberta If you want the ultimate adventure sports holiday, there is no finer place than the Canadian Rockies to experience it. With high peaks, fast-running rapids and a rugged terrain, a trip to Alberta will quite literally take your breath away. To get the most of your holiday, travel between December and April for the ultimate skiing experience. Compare car hire to ensure you get the best deal before you fly so you can spend all your hard earned cash making the most of your holiday. Do arrange to collect your car at Calgary Airport as in a country this vast, having access to your own vehicle makes life much easier.
When most people head to Alberta for a ski trip, they go to the resorts of Jasper and Banff where the national parks are filled with the Rockies. Being such popular tourist destinations, they do get rather busy so if you want to experience Jasper, try the Marmot Basin which tends to be less crowded. With over 300km of trails and downhill slopes, it is perfect for every level of experience. However, if you wanted to try somewhere a little different and less crowded, it’s onto the road to Red Deer and to Alberta’s largest non-mountain resort where you ski a canyon. There are 13 trails available here and being not as busy will mean you’ll get more time on the slopes than queuing to get onto them! Located just 7 miles from town, it’s a perfect place to enjoy the snow and before heading back to Red Deer to enjoy the Canadian way of life.
For something a little more traditional, you can also try your hand at tobogganing, which is a great way to enjoy the snow! It’s widely available throughout the province, with hills even dedicated to it in the cities of Edmonton and Calgary. It’s fun and it’s low cost which is perfect! And then if you really want to push the boat out, book yourself in for some dog sledding and go back to basics. It’s an experience of a lifetime as huskies pull you through the snow and you can either have a guide take the reins or if you’re feeling brave, take charge of the sled yourself.
It’s not all just about the snow here though, with a wide range of adventure sports available and suitable to the landscape. Take a drive south from Calgary to Elbow River which is perfect for many types of water sports. To enjoy the river at its best, indulge in some kayaking as it is absolutely breathtaking here. With fast flowing waters, it’s absolutely thrilling but also quite scary and it’s definitely somewhere for the experienced kayaker. If you’ve never kayaked before, it’s best to try your hand at it at Bow River, which is a short drive away and where the water is much more sedate. Here as well as kayaking, you can enjoy canoeing and even some fishing if you feel like resting your heartbeat for a while.
