Cabarete a Watersport Destination!
Known as the Mecca for Kitesurfing, Cabarete offers great opportunities for water sports. Year by year many enthusiastic kiters from all over the world, or those who want to become one, choose Cabarete as their favourite destination.
Perfect wind conditions, crystal clear warm water, lots of sunshine and the beautiful Caribbean surroundings with its white beaches and thousands of palm trees are the best reasons to come.
What many people don't know is that Cabarete also offers great waves for surfing. The main Surf spot Playa Encuentro has waves all year around with the so called "winter season" from November until April as its best. Within that time ground swells from Canada reach the Dominican north shore and create amazing waves. The reef break Encuentro is the most consistent spot with a couple of left and right breaks. Surf schools are open all year around as even the "summer season" and also the rest of the year brings nice waves nearly every day. In summer a bit smaller, but perfect for beginners and still very good for intermediate and advanced surfers.
But also for those who are not affine to water sports, Cabarete and its surroundings offer a lot of other things such as diving the cave of Lake Dudu, mountain biking in the national park El Choco, boat tours over the river or just horseback riding during the sunset on the beach. Another highlight is to hike the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua, a good mix of adventure and great nature.
As the annual host of the Kitesurfing world cup, taking place in Cabarete in July this event will attract many visitors again in 2009. The opportunity to see the best Kiters in the world competing against each other is one of the highlights every year in Cabarete. The local riders such as Ariel Cornel, Emmanuel Rondon, Alex Soto or Luis Alberto will play a major role for the title race again this year.
