Ontario, Canada, Canoeing, Kayaking, campers, nature lovers

Covering around 8000 square km of rugged Canadian Shield country, Algonquin Park is truly a paradise for canoeists, kayakers, campers and nature lovers alike. A canoe tripper could spend a lifetime exploring the 1600km of routes, follow lakes, streams and portage trails through this vast space. The park is home to a diverse wildlife population, as well as an abundance of unspoiled lakes, rivers and spectacular scenery.

Away from the city lights, Algonquin provides a glorious backdrop to any canoe camping experience. With tremendous white pines and high rolling hills, this is a great way to explore the Ontario wilderness. Most of the park is only accessible by canoe or on foot, which makes this the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. And what better way to escape than among maple hills, stunning rocky ridges, and thousands of deep blue lakes.

Paddling a canoe is one of the most serene and fulfilling watersports activities. Two people per boat makes this the perfect romantic retreat, but larger cedar dugouts can also make for an exhilarating family excursion. These stable canoes mean you are totally in control of your own trip. Getting in and out easily makes an impromptu island excursion - or stopping to catch a glimpse of a moose - a breeze - you'll feel closer to nature than you ever thought possible.

On-site specialists and guides are on hand to provide the information that's vital to planning your canoeing trip. Park maps are a necessity to experience the vast range of canoe routes on offer. Trips range from one day relaxed paddling, to week long camping adventures. One of the most popular routes among the seriously adventurous is a five-day trip over 70km of water, from Galeairy Lake to Whitney. This trip covers 16 portages, adding up to 8130m and takes you through some of Ontario's most breathtaking scenery.

When you're exhausted after a long day's paddling, a relaxing night under the stars proves the perfect end to an incredible day. Watch the sun set over deeply forreseted hills into crystal lakes. Once the sun has disappeared, be prepared for a night of star-gazing and campfires in this idyllic wilderness haven.
