Diving into the Warmth of Malta
A warm welcome to you, from the beautiful country of Malta. Before you peg this sunny island as just another seaside getaway you should know Malta is no ordinary destination. The present day Maltese Islands are made up of three islands, Malta, Gozo, and Comino. Before gaining independence from Britain in 1964, Malta had been occupied by everyone from the Phoenicians to the French, quite an upbringing and one that contributes to its unique vibe. Another character creating factor is its location. Malta is just south of Sicily, right between Europe and North Africa. Now a member of the EU, this Mediterranean based haven has all sorts of influences. You’ll see what I mean once you check out the landscape, both city and rural, and take in the interesting architecture.
Malta’s consistently warm and pleasant climate is perfect for a wide range of land and water activity. As there are three islands within the area, water sports are, of course, a huge draw. This makes it easy to find places for equipment rental, letting you try just about anything the sea offers. One of the coolest water adventures you can have is diving. The surrounding sea is warm throughout the year (especially if, like me, you’re used to swimming in the frigid Atlantic) and that, along with good visibility, gives you a glimpse of Malta’s underwater treasures, including caves, reefs, and even wrecks. A snorkel and pair of goggles is enough to see some of these offerings while others will require you to go deeper with the aid of scuba gear. Diving lessons are available on each of the islands.
If you prefer to stay above the water, or at least want to make a valiant effort at it, rent a jet ski and zip around the Mediterranean. You can also try your hand at kayaking, canoeing, or sailing. For a bigger adrenaline buzz, strap on a pair of water skis or opt for some windsurfing. For the truly fearless, and those who don’t mind heights, take in the sea from above while paragliding.
When you’re ready to take on Malta’s denser landscape, head to the cliffs for caving and rock climbing. Perhaps a more unique land based option offered by Malta is horse-back riding. This is a great way to take in the scenery while becoming a bit closer to nature. Cycling is another popular option for countryside exploration.
With several accommodation options, you won’t have a problem finding a place to recuperate after a busy day out in the sun. Hotels can be found on each of the three islands, whether you prefer busy Malta or smaller Comino. Depending on your needs and perhaps the size of your group, you can also rent an apartment for your stay. Guesthouses and hostels are also scattered throughout the country giving you plenty of choice when it comes to where to sleep.
Without a doubt Malta has something for everyone. How could you not enjoy a country rich in history, opportunities for adventure, and natural beauty? For more information visit Malta MyDestination.
