In need of change of scenery? There’s no better place for a little shot of sun than the Algarve. On Portugal’s southern coastline, the Algarve’s golden beaches, crystal waters, blue skies, and white washed buildings bring you to the brighter side of life. The scenery and warm weather create the perfect backdrop for some serious outdoor adventure.

Given the nearby ocean, water sports are huge. Go surfing and see how well you tackle the waves on a board. If you’re in search of a different type of challenge, add a twist and give kitesurfing a try. Keeping along with the “board” theme, spend an afternoon wakeboarding and get in that practice time on your freestyle air moves. Looking to ditch the board? Snorkeling and canoeing are other means of checking out the ocean environment. For a chance to explore the Algarve’s well-known grottos, make sure you do some sea kayaking and discover the area’s hidden treasures.

When you’ve had enough of water-based activity, there is no shortage of land-based offerings to try. Mountain biking is especially popular in the region. If it a tour via two wheels is your thing, go for it- there’s enough terrain to form an entire week’s holiday around the sport. If you’re up for it, go rock climbing on the sea cliffs, another great way to experience the natural beauty of the Algarve. Hiking and walking tours are a more grounded way to see historical sights and enjoy the rolling hills.

After a day spent in the great outdoors, you’ll need food and probably a place to sleep. Don’t worry, the Algarve has you covered. Seafood lovers will be especially happy as Algarve restaurants offer numerous fresh fish options. Opt for the non-seafood route and sample traditional Portuguese dishes like chicken piri- piri, a well-known meal that can be mild or fire engine hot. Personally I find middle of the range is quite nice. There is no shortage of restaurants, whether you would like something regional or more familiar.

When it comes to accommodation, Algarve hotels are quite numerous. Need a bit of pampering after a long day of mountain biking? There are resort spas and high-end hotels to help you out. If you’re a bit more budget conscious, less expensive hotels and hostels are available in well placed locations. So give the Algarve a go, it won’t let you down.
