Coasteering: What is it?

Jumping off random cliffs into the sea is not clever. However, there is a sport that uses local experts to help groups navigate around the coast so they can then jump safely – and it’s a whole lot of fun. The sport is: Coasteering.

If ever there is country that is perfect for Coasteering, it’s the United Kingdom. We’ve rocky coasts and coves aplenty, and no shortage of cliffs. So what is Coasteering ? Surely, it can’t just be jumping off cliffs?

A usual day’s Coasteering will involve swimming, climbing, scrambling and cliff jumping – but only if you want. All trips begin with a safety brief and equipment check you will be kitted out with a helmet, wetsuit and life vest, and you will need to wear some old trainers you don’t mind getting wet.

From here it could be a short sea swim to the first jump site, and a demonstration on how to enter the water carefully with some scrambling tips. Then you’re off! Following an instructor, you get to swim through rock pools, around rugged rocks and right up to the next jump spot.

A brief climb and you’ll be peering over the edge wondering, “why the hell did I agree to this?” Then, and to the roars of your friends, you’re leaping in, with a smile that’s guaranteed to last the rest of the day.

It’s exciting that’s for sure. If ever a sport could claim to be confidence building, this is it. And it’s also a group activity, so get ready for some serious bonding as you share the cliffs and waves.

Companies use trained guides who have established knowledge of local tides, hazards and weather conditions. These people lead the show and are qualified lifesavers – always reassuring.

Unsure if you fancy all this fun, then book a coasteering taster session with Freedom Adventures who are running a half day trip on the 14th of August in Swanage; you will be thrilled, we guarantee it!

If you’ve already been, we know for sure it’s an experience you will never forget.

Just leave a comment and tell us how much you liked it!

If I wasn’t as a wedding that weekend I would be there like a Puffin up a cliff face!

I got into this in Wales, it’s great. Lovely jumping into an old harbour, just back from the rugged coast. Up the rock like a puffin, off it like a lemming, ker-splash!

I’ve done coasteering couple times. One being in Switzerland, now the water there was freezing!

It is good fun, lots of adrenaline rushes! A mix of swimming, rock climbing, abseiling, cliff jumping. You would have thought it is dangerous, but it’s not!

Only done it once, down cornwall way a couple years ago. Its deffo a fantastic way to explore the coast as you get to see our beautiful coastline from a totaly new perspective. Just reading the article has sparked an itch to go again.

Last time it was an informal session with some mates and as long as you use your head, take the right gear and a local yokle with knowledge of the area its a fantastic way to spend a weekend.
