Five Craziest Christmas Lunches
While most people opt to stay at home at Christmas, there’s always an intrepid bunch that spend it out on the ground.
So here’s a list of the best, and most extreme places to have your Christmas lunch. If you’ve had your turkey from a reheated packet on the side of a mountain, or opened your presents perched on cliff edge, we want to hear about it.
The Poles
North or south, festivities at either are about as extreme as you can get. Polar explorers in their snow shelters have long tucked into a tin of Christmas pud, decorated with a candle for festive effect.
The Desert Island
While unlikely to be anywhere near a desert, Pacific islands are about as far removed from the lavishly garnished Christmas tables we are all used to. With just a coconut and some fish caught from the sea, it sounds like paradise to us.

Mid-flight
A little more down to earth: But for us travellers there’s always the chance we’ll be pulling our Christmas crackers with the flight attendants. No matter how hard they try airlines can never make a decent Christmas at 35,000ft, although a few extra bottles of complementary wine always helps.
On the Piste
Or even off the piste. There’s no need to stop for lunch when you can take a packed lunch to the slopes. Get off the piste and unpack. Get together with friends and have your meal looking across the Alps. A shot of gluwine from the flask to warm up before you ski or snowboard on.
On the Road
Long distance cyclists and intrepid trekkers all stop to eat. And when it’s Christmas lunch it could be a truck-stop or local cafe that becomes their festive pit-stop. These hardcore adventure sports people deserve our respect: so if they fall at your door please pick them up, dust them off and treat them to the slap-up meal they need.
Stopped for Xmas scoff anywhere interesting?

Had mine in a farmhouse in France. Hardly crazy but we did have to chop wood for the fire and collect water from a spring.
No TV or Internet: Loved it!
I had a crazy amount to eat, but didn’t eat it anywhere adventurous…. Although my 3 meat (Turkey, Gammon and roast Beef) sandwich was pretty extreme!
