The view from the top

Forget sun, sea and sand – wouldn’t you rather remember a holiday for something other than lying on a beach sunning yourself? This year, ditch the bikini and swap it for a fleece and some decent walking boots and get ready to enjoy the experience of a lifetime!

While you may not be ready just yet to tackle France’s Mont Blanc, said to be one of the world’s deadliest mountains, there are plenty more achievable climbs to look forward to.

Here in the UK, we’re fortunate to have some of the world’s most spectacular views, often within just a few hours’ drive.

An extensive playground for rock climbers of all abilities, the UK offers some of the best climbing areas. Take a look at the limestone sea cliffs in Swanage or the gritstone escarpment ridges found in the beautiful Peak District.

If you’re looking to get kitted out, take a look online. There are plenty of fleece jackets, boots, rucksacks, socks and all the essentials you’ll need before planning your adventure holiday.

A climbing holiday is ultimately about the experience itself. True, it may require more planning than a run of the mill package holiday to Spain, but the enjoyment you’ll get out of it, as well as the memories you’ll bring home, is simply unbeatable.

Take in the panoramic views of England’s Wye Valley, which is relatively easy to access via direct roads from the M4. Choose this climbing location and you’ll even find it’s possible to stop close to the climb start points – perfect if you’re new to the hobby.

Doing your research online is imperative. This will help you determine where the best climbs are for you. Find a climb within your grade and set about getting all the gear you need before you take your trip. You may even want to give your climbing essentials a practice run to ensure everything feels comfortable and fits well.

As with any hobby, you’ll need to get the right kit. From waterproof boots to climbing harnesses and hats and gloves, fail to prepare and you’re preparing to fail. Thankfully, men’s waterproof boots, women’s climbing shoes and much more can be bought online or in climbing shops.

Make sure you do your research before making those all-important purchases. No one wants to buy second hand waterproof walking boots or men’s waterproof jackets to find they leak at the first sight of rain. Good quality waterproof jackets can be pricey, but you’ll soon find a decent one is well worth it. Women’s waterproof jackets are also available online, in a range of colours for the more fashion conscious climber!

So, if you’re looking for something a bit different this year, consider swapping your sunglasses for a good hat and gloves and take a look at the climbing holidays available right on your doorstep.
