Foz Do Iguassu city is famous for one reason: it is home to simply the most incredible waterfall in the world. Located in southern Brazil, about 400km west of Curitiba on the Brazil / Argentina / Paraguay border, the falls have a Brazilian and an Argentinean side, with an ongoing debate as to which side has better views.
The waterfall is actually made up of about 275 separate falls from the same river, varying in height and flow. The highest fall is the “Gargata do Diablo” or “Devil’s Throat”, which stands at an impressive 97m on the Argentinean side. or incredible views from all angles. You can also take a ride in a power-boat, which will give you an angle of the falls from below - and the boat will even stop under one of the less aggressive waterfalls, soaking you!
You can also take a helicopter ride for an aerial view, which is absolutely stunning. The mist which is created by the huge mass of falling water has created a pocket of micro-climates around the waterfalls, with amazing rainforest and tropical birds and butterflies. The surrounding Iguassu National Park however is restricted from access by the public, which means that apart from visiting the falls, there isn’t a huge amount to do in the town.
Visit the Triple Frontier, the location where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet, each on its own side of a river fork, and each side with its own landmark. Cross the border to Paraguay one day, where you can visit the duty-free markets. This will be a great cultural experience, as the atmosphere is crowded and lively, and you are likely encounter Paraguayan children trying to sell you socks!
Another attraction can be found just outside the city is Itaipu Dam: the second largest generator of hydro-electric power in the world. The water flow through here is incredible, and it is well worth a half-day trip to check it out. There are plenty of hotels and hostels to stay in on either side of Iguassu, as tourism is the area's biggest attraction.
