Once a vital form of transport, canoeing has evolved over the years to become of the most popular water sports as well as achieving Olympic status.

There is always confusion around the difference between a kayak and a canoe. Put simply a kayak has a closed deck apart from the hole (the bit where you sit) and is propelled by a double ended paddle. A canoe is open decked, in which you would either knee or stand, using a single paddle.

The popularity of canoeing is due to the many forms in which you can experience the sport. Many go canoeing down a scenic river in a leisurely fashion, staying dry and admiring the view. For the more adrenalin fuelled ride try dropping down a 40 foot waterfall or negotiating a river rapid.

Getting Involved

There are many canoeing clubs around UK, Europe and the world. It’s a good move to join one so you’ll be canoeing with others, making it safer and more varied. We offer canoeing courses on the site which are a fantastic introduction to the sport. Alternatively you can go on an adventure holiday based around canoeing where you’ll not only be learning a new sport but meeting like minded people and having a great time.

Equipment Needed

A canoe (400-700 pounds), paddle (40 pounds), buoyancy aid (30-60 pounds), wetsuit (80 pounds), trainers or wetsuit boots and a crash helmet (30-60 pounds).
