South Carolina Department of Parks & Tourism
The citizens of South Carolina are served by and benefit directly from the economic development activities of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT). In South Carolina’s state parks, visitors are given the opportunity to experience the diverse natural and cultural resources that project the essence of South Carolina. Through SCPRT’s tourism-based Community and Economic Development efforts, it is able to extend the benefits of tourism to all areas of the state and to assist rural and lesser-developed communities in generating economic activities. By promoting tourism, SCPRT plays a key role in accomplishing the objective of increasing personal income of South Carolinians.
Our Purpose
South Carolina is blessed with an abundance of natural and man-made gifts – historic cities that attract visitors from all over the world, pristine beaches that stretch for hundreds of miles, small towns that offer a unique glimpse into days gone by, black water rivers for a peaceful day of kayaking or canoeing and spectacular golf courses that wow the avid amateur and challenge the best touring pros. Those gifts and more helped fuel a seasonal business called tourism and turned it into a powerhouse that now ranks as the state’s number one industry. No one could have predicted such a rosy future when the General Assembly created the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism way back in 1967. Legislators assigned the agency three very specific tasks:
To help foster and promote the state’s emerging tourism industry;
To protect and promote South Carolina state parks; and
To help communities plan and develop recreational opportunities for local residents.
Our Mission
To raise personal income of South Carolinians by creating a better environment for economic growth through delivering state government services more effectively, improving quality of life and promoting economic development through tourism.
Our Vision
Shaping and sharing a better South Carolina through stewardship, service, economic development and marketing.
