ntral America, but small doesn’t mean uninspiring. The centre and continental edge of the country is mountainous highland that includes the 2,730m peak of Cerro El Pital, the country’s highest point. This could be considered the more adventurous area of the country, as the terrain flattens the closer you get to the coast.
While deforestation has been a problem in the past, much of the country’s natural beauty is now protected. There is a system of more than 300 rivers running through the heart of El Salvador, including the 10,255km of shimmering Rio Lempa.
The tropical climate means it stays hot here all year round. The rainy season occurs from May to October, and this period is certainly the most unpredictable in terms of weather.

Fishing
El Salvador is a fantastic location to experience the two different sides of fishing. The first, sitting lazily in the evening warmth enjoying the scenery and company. Maybe you’ll catch something small, if you’re lucky - this doesn’t sound too adventurous, but it’s one of the ultimate leisure activities.
The second, getting your adrenaline racing as you head a little way out into the Pacific to battle with the giants of the sea. Off the Salvadoran coast you’ll find large game-fish including marlin and grouper. These fish will really give you a fight, and you’ll need all the help you can get from the experienced guides.
Fishing here will be enjoyable no matter what level of experience or skill you have. It’s rewarding and addictive, and you’ll be sure to come back for more.
Multi-Activity
One of the best reasons to come to El Salvador is it crams in all of the most attractive features of Central America into a fairly small space. Given that the country is not anywhere near the size of its neighbours, it affords you much more opportunity to see the best it has to offer, all in a short amount of time.
Explore the countryside of the mountainous central plateau; there are plenty of different ways to do this: trek through the woodlands, swim in the lakes, zip-line high in the trees or ride on horseback.
Surfing
Despite the disruptive recent history, El Salvador has put itself on the map as a truly legendary surfing destination. La Libertad is home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the continent, complete with perfect waves. El Sunzal in particular is known for its consistent breaks: ideal for both beginners and experts.
The beaches west of La Libertad are known as the ‘West Coast’, and you can find all sorts of surfing diversity if you are willing to a little travel between them.
The locals tend to be very knowledgeable about surfing, and people will be happy to help if you need some guidance. There are a plethora of shops and schools so finding lessons for a novice won’t be a problem.
Classic Itineraries
You’ll probably start your Salvadoran adventure in San Salvador, the capital city. San Salvador is an intriguing Central American take on cosmopolitan living; you’ll find trendy bars and absorbing cultural museums in close proximity.
No trip to El Salvador would be complete without spending some time by the sea. There is so much variety it doesn’t matter if you are looking to push yourself to the limit, or simply lounge around basking in the sun. The salty freshness permeates the air, and you can’t help but walk around with a smile on your face.
Surfing is virtually mandatory; even if you have never done it before, El Salvador is the perfect place to start your surfing adventure. Especially La Libertad, an attractive and exciting port, that has numerous idyllic spots.
Head inland towards the mountains and you’ll be treated to a beautiful green landscape. As the problems of deforestation are pushed into the past it’s worth taking a moment to enjoy sights that could have been wiped out not so long ago.
Other Activities
If you are interested in delving into El Salvador’s past, there are all sorts of opportunities. Moving past the museums of San Salvador or the wonderful architecture of Santa Ana, there are also ancient Mayan ruins revealing secrets to a forgotten past.
But don’t spend all of your time studying the past. On the shoreline there are plenty of watersports available. Especially popular are diving and snorkelling, thanks to El Salvador enjoying such temperate water.
