With a diverse landscape, Germany offers the bold traveller a wealth of opportunities for fun. At the north of the country there is a shoreline on the Baltic Sea, where you can go sailing or diving. There are skiing and snowboarding resorts nestled in the Alps. And you can trek or bike through the woodland areas of central and western Germany.
The summer tends to be mild, while the winters will descend into chilling temperatures and provide for decent amounts of snow . Rain is likely all year round. The Alpine region is much colder, of course, but much of the country is pleasantly warm during Spring and benefits from well defined seasons..
Cycling
Germany is a big place, the second largest in the European Union: there is a lot of it to see. One ideal solution to taking in the fine countryside is to cycle.
Whether you’re interested in the forests and leafy plains in the centre of Germany or the rocky Alpine region, there are some stunning sights to take in.
Weaving your way through mountainous trails will certainly be more challenging and perhaps better suited to the more experienced riders. For those looking for gentler terrain, the picturesque Rhine Valley or the rolling hills near the North Sea coast could be perfect.
Multi-Activity
With 16 states, all featuring their own unique culture and environment, there is always going to be something new to discover - there’s no way you can fit it all in, but you could try.
A multi-activity holiday is perfect if you want to get a feel for a lot of different experiences but not devote too long to them. These adventures are often aimed more at beginners looking to try extreme activities out for the first time. Although, who’s to stop you picking up a new sport and taking it further yourself?
Rock Climbing
Germany’s rugged terrain accords unlimited spots for climbing. While the north is mostly flatlands, southern Bavaria is home to the Alps, making it a haven for climbers, there’s also other mountainous ascents favoured by climbers, such as the Rhine-Main and Black Forest regions.
It’s best to go in the summer season so you can enjoy lush rural Germany in all of its glory. Climbing in the winter would be uncomfortable for all but the most intrepid.
Whether you’re doing it for sport, leisure or just seeing how far you can push yourself, there’s somewhere to do it in Germany.
Skiing
Less well-known than its Swiss or French counterparts, the German Alps nevertheless boast many fine ski resorts. Enjoy the smooth runs of the towering Nebelhorn, which rises 7,297ft above sea level; Garmisch, Obersdorf, Mittenwald and Berchtesgaden are all well-established regions and offer all the expected access routes and colour-coded runs you could ever need.
Thanks to its varied terrain, you can expect challenges for experts and great beginners’ routes. In Germany, skiing is only possible in the winter months, but before the snow arrives, there’s always the mountains to enjoy.
Skydiving
There are many ways to see Germany. But nothing quite compares to view you’ll get freefalling from 13,000ft. Most of the skydiving opportunities in Germany are found in the flatter central and northern regions which allow for easier landings.
Beginners who just want the thrilling experience, can jump tandem in the safe hands of qualified instructors. Those looking for pickng up the skills to take part in future skydives can take part in a course that ends with the solo dive qulification. The more experienced will find plenty of dive opportunities too.
Trekking
A trek across the wide expanses of rural Germany is one of the only experiences that can be both tranquil and highly invigorating.
The heart of southern Germany features a landscape that could come direct from a fairytale. The peaks of the Bavarian mountains give way to lush green valleys; so you’ll soon discover find the quaint villages, historic towns and there’s even imposing German castles, known as ‘Schlosses’.
The scenery is stunning. The unspoiled leafy views are beautiful in the summer, but are arguably more picturesque in autumn with the changing colours of the seasons. The temperate weather around this time is ideal for walking too.
Classic Itineraries
Germany is an eclectic mix of old-world charm, exquisite countryside and vibrant, modern cities. Adventurers might well be drawn to the rocky Bavarian south with opportunities for extreme winter sports and picturesque views.
If you’re travelling in the winter, it’s probably best to enjoy the Bavarian ski resorts. You can then spend some time in the southern cities enjoying the fine architecture and animated nightlife.
If you’re going for the warmer summer months there are a wider range of possibilities. It’s worth seeing the mild Baltic Sea coastline for a range of watersports. Thrill seekers will opportunities for mountain biking, skydiving and rock climbing. And cities such as the cosmopolitan Berlin and historic Frankfurt make a fantastic change of scenery.
Other Activities
There are 16 unique and distinct states are waiting for you, each harbouring a plethora of new experiences. The diverse culture affords both ancient beauty and modern delights.
The big cities are home to some of the world’s most stunning architecture and fascinating museums. The colossal, gothic Cologne Cathedral, or Berlin’s parliamentary Reichstag building are joys to behold.
Petrol-heads can find an experience like no other should they brave the 28,000km Nurburgring racetrack. But if adrenaline is your preferred fuel, there’s hang gliding and bungee jumping too.
