Cultural

Guatemala prides itself on its ancient cultural heritage and beliefs. Remote mountain villages such as Chichicastenango still practice ancient Mayan traditions, and many local families can date their ancestors back to this era. Both the capital city and isolated highland and volcanic regions are steeped in spectacular archaeological sites. National park Tikal is the biggest Mayan city known and studied. Temples and plazas can be seen here, as well as the outstanding Mayan astronomic observatory. La Ciudad Perdida, ‘Lost City’, is located at the bank of the Pasion River, and is one of the country's most magnificent ancient cities.
