Guatemala City is the modern, cosmopolitan capital, a bustling metropolis presenting contrasting panoramas between colonial architecture and modern buildings. The Guatemalan highlands are a region of extraordinary natural beauty and cultural richness. You can immerse yourself in the magical Mayan legacy of an ancient civilisation that dates back to 12,000BC. e volcanoes. Travellers seeking off-the-beaten-track destinations can enjoy one of many remote Maya villages, hidden away in the Cuchumantanes Mountains. Fascinating towns, such as Chichicastenango, still practice pre-Hispanic rituals even now.
The Guatemalan tourist season is from Christmas to Easter. Cool nights and mornings should be expected, yet this can be the best climate to visit El Peten and the volcanic regions. This is also the Guatemalan holiday season, so booking ahead is advisable. March and April are the driest and hottest months. The rains begin in May or June. Mud and mosquitoes are a problem during this time, particularly in the lowland jungles. The dry season is from November to April, and this means sweltering heat in El Peten and along the coasts, but comfortably warm days in the highlands. Rain is possible at any time in the eastern parts of the country.

Cultural

Guatemala prides itself on its ancient cultural heritage and beliefs. Remote mountain villages such as Chichicastenango still practice ancient Mayan traditions, and many local families can date their ancestors back to this era. Both the capital city and isolated highland and volcanic regions are steeped in spectacular archaeological sites. National park Tikal is the biggest Mayan city known and studied. Temples and plazas can be seen here, as well as the outstanding Mayan astronomic observatory. La Ciudad Perdida, ‘Lost City’, is located at the bank of the Pasion River, and is one of the country's most magnificent ancient cities.

Multi-Activity

Guatemala is an exciting adventure destination. This exotic and diverse natural paradise boats 33 volcanoes, 93 protected areas, and 1.4 million hectares in the Maya biosphere reserve. Guatemala is a prime area for rafting enthusiasts; it is a mountainous region with an abundance of river and streams. Combining rafting and biking holidays is becoming increasingly popular. A recent British group celebrated a Pacific to Atlantic crossing in just ten days. In spite of the dry season running from December to May, there’s always a river open for rafting or kayaking. Surfing has taken off in recent years on Guatemala’s Pacific coast. Facilities in coastal areas for fishing, diving and surfing are numerous and at a professional standard.

Overland Tours

Travelling by car is perhaps the best way to experience the mystical and hot eastern region. This area is one of the most well-preserved forest eco systems that you can imagine. The famous Basilica of Esquipulas is home to the famous Black Christ. No mountain or volcano is unconquerable on an overland tour. You can experience the most diverse regions of the country. Overland tours help you visit lakes and natural reserves while experiencing local communities previously hidden to western eyes.

Whitewater Rafting

Guatemala’s clear blue rapids range from Class two II to Class V. In spite of the dry season from December to May, the mountainous region has an abundance of water resources and there’s always a river open for rafting or kayaking. The drops are spectacular. Rafters on the Caribbean side are likely to encounter monkeys, toucans and parrots as they twist and turn their way down to sea level. Rafting holidays allow you to experience the Guatemalan rainforest and marvel at the large variety of flora and fauna. You can explore the Mayan archaeology by boat, sail through pristine mountain pools and relax on the Belize Barrier Reef.

Mountain Biking

By Mountain bike you can experience the archaeological and cultural wonders of Guatemala much faster than you could by foot. Visit the Pacific region by bike. An area surrounded by imposing volcanic landscapes, natural reserves, beaches of volcanic sands and important archaeological sites. This is an exotic tropical region, characterized by the warmth of the people. This area is perfect for mountainbiking whilst indulging in spectacular views from either challenging or relaxing trails. Camping is available across Guatemala’s high and low regions, with hotels and restaurants easily found in local towns and cities.

Trekking

Guatemala’s mountains and volcanoes are prime locations for the avid hiker or climber. The Guatemalan highland is a region of extraordinary natural beauty, offering you the chance to immerse yourself in the Maya legacy and become part of the mystical experience. Hike to the national park of Tikal by dawn for a challenging but rewarding, spectacular experience. The Agua volcano is a classic visit for those who love to climb. It is ideal for amateurs and family excursions. It is the sixth highest volcano of the country, yet it still has easy access. The rustic village at the top has excellent camping facilities and is pleasantly cool. Spas of thermal water, with ancient medicinal attributes, and stunning waterfalls are a must-see in the volcanic municipality of Tajumulco, at 4,200m.

Horse Riding

If you’re looking for a four-footed experience, you can rent horses or mules and aim for practically anywhere in the country. Popular excursions involve a ‘two days up and two days back’ trip to El Mirador in the far north of the country. Horseback rides have become a popular activity for those looking to climb an active volcano. Horse riding is an enjoyable way of experiencing the sights Guatemala has to offer. With both challenging and relaxing moments, the sport is appealing for the intrepid adventurer as well as the family member.

Classic Itineraries

Guatemala contrasts ancient religious civilisation with busy metropolis, spectacular mountain peaks with humid, lowland rainforests - you are advised to sample them all! The intriguing Antigua Guatemala, located 45km from the capital, reveals a dramatic history of conquest, grandeur, destruction and rebirth. Destroyed by volcanic eruptions for 200 years, gradually settlers returned to Antigua to resurrect this jewel of modern and colonial, urban architecture. This is a prime starting point for any trip to the country. The ancient Mayan sites in the Guatemalan highlands are a unique and spectacular must-see - especially the Tikal national park, home to the most spectacular ancient cities known to man. White-water rafting is also an excellent experience to add to your trip. Guatemala boasts world-class rapids for both the amateur and the experienced adventurer.

Other Activities

The cruise ship industry is one of the fastest growing segments of Guatemalan tourism; passengers can experience a huge range of the country’s rich beauty and variety in a very short stay.
