Adventure sports instructors are living the dream! What better way is there to spend your working days than outdoors in the fresh air, most probably in a beautiful setting and teaching others how to enjoy your favourite adventure sport. The added bonus is you get to develop you own skills, stay fit and meet like-minded people.

Work Visas & Permits

If you are planning to work abroad after you've gained your qualification then you will need a work visa. The visas are to ensure that you do not work illegally and should be secured before leaving home. Most foreign countries have an overseas embassy established in your country. Look online before travelling to the embassy, and find out what other relevant information you will need to produce to be granted your work visa. (You’ll usually need to take passport photos, some medical information or vaccination certificates, the visa fee and your passport, but be sure to check before you leave.)

Health & Safety

Depending on which country you will train or work in you might need to get some vaccinations and medications. These are usually only required for more exotic climes and areas that have defined risks. Always get your meds in order before you leave. If you have any prescription medications or ongoing treatments, make sure you are stocked up, don't expect to be able to find the same drugs overseas.
For this reason you should depart with all the correct medications and ensure you store them as best you can whilst abroad. A good first aid kit is also handy to carry with you.

Finding a Course

The world is your oyster! Decide what it is you want to teach, where you want to teach it, and perhaps consider where you might find work after you qualify. From here, just research the industry standards, and pick the right course for you.

A recommendation from friends who may have done the course before you is a good place to start. Or chat to some potential employers and ask them which qualifications, they as professionals, view as the best and most recognised in the industry. From there its well worth doing some extensive research of the various schools that will help you qualify.

Once you've chosen the course and the school, your course fees will usually cover all your tuition and equipment hire. If you're doing a course abroad, then accommodation and most of your food will also be included in the course price. Airfares will not be included but airport transfers might be.

Get Inspired!

The most popular sports to learn are Skiing, Snowboarding, Trekking, Mountain Climbing, Surfing, White Water Rafting, Kitesurfing, Wakeboarding, Windsurfing, Scuba Diving, Climbing, Kayaking and Sailing.

And there's plenty more. And once you've gained your qualification, it could take you all over the world, exploring, teaching and living the dream.

Planning

There are some pre-requisites that are just plain common sense, and others that are more specific and detailed for each sport. However, a passion for your sport and a good level of general fitness is always needed. Also, if you're planning to train or work in a foreign country then you’ll need to speak the language. If you can speak a few languages then this is an added bonus as it will broaden your own working options, and help accommodate a wider range of cliental.
