The most common two-wheel transport in Rome is the Vespa-style Scooter, but cycling around this huge city is just as popular, and even more rewarding. At least half the city centre is made up of pedestrian areas or restricted traffic areas. And with such an array of landmarks to visit, walking is just not quick enough. There are many tailored cycling routes, such as one that starts near the Vatican and travels north to the Foro Italico, before reaching the River Tiber. If you want to venture further, the hills (Colli Albani) that surround the capital’s outskirts provide great mountainbike adventures, with Roman castles painted in the background.
Rollerblading is an equally exciting way to traverse Rome. Many Romans do it because it is so much faster than walking, but mainly because it is fun. The glorious gardens of Villa Borghese are the favourite destination for perfecting the sport.
For other fun activities, why not treat yourself like a true Roman? The city has an abundance of fitness centres and saunas often home to squash courts, massage parlours, sunbeds and swimming pools. Not quite the Roman baths of ancient times but certainly a great modern equivalent.
