aches and the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, Montenegro is a breathtaking, picturesque holiday destination.

Montenegro’s lower areas enjoy a Mediterranean climate: dry summers and mild, rainy winters. It's capital city, Podorica, near sea level, is noted for having the warmest summer temperature in the country, averaging 27C in July. Temperature varies with elevation. Cetinje, in the Karst, at an elevation of 670m, has temperatures 5C lower. Montenegro’s mountainous regions receive some of the highest levels of rainfall in Europe, and include some of the continent's most rugged terrain. This is a country of diversity, in environment as well as culture. The terrain of Montenegro ranges from high mountains through a segment of the western Balkan Peninsula, to narrow coastal plains, and huge plunging gulfs and valleys.

You can escape the throng of the city as you wonder at the wild national parks, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the ancient fortified town of Kotor. On your walks you will see sunbathing lizards, as well as jackals, tortoise and eagles.

Skiing

A relatively new tourist attraction, Montenegro is finally making the most of its beautiful natural assets. For years its ski fields in the north have been the preserve of locals. Finally, these first-rate slopes are open to tourists. Now you can also explore the area on snow mobiles, or climb the snowy regions of northern Mt. Bjelasica. The nearby ski resort, Jezerine, remains snow-covered through autumn, winter and spring. Maintained to an Olympic standard for international competitions, these slopes stretch over nine miles. The slopes at Jezerine can take 8,000 skiers at any one time. In reality, however, you can bomb down well-maintained trails in March and April with only a handful of fellow skiers to bother you.

Classic Itineraries

The sights of Montenegro are numerous. It is a blessing that thanks to the size of the country, you could see it all in just one trip! Tourists to Montenegro can indulge on the beach or on one of the challenging adventure activities. Durmitor National Park lets you explore glacial lakes in the midst of peaks of over 2000m. Flora and fauna will delight all as you experience wooded valleys, colourful wildflowers and high Alpine meadows across the country. And the cultural sights of 17th century Ostrog monastery - dramatically built into sheer cliff face – and the medieval town Kotor, are prime sight-seeing destinations. The more adventurous traveller can enjoy mountain biking, skiing and white-water rafting in the country’s mountain towns with the town of Zabljak boasting world-class rafting ratings.

Other Activities

The beautiful town of Zabljak, located high in the Balkan Peninsula, provides a popular winter tourism destination. The tiny town is home to skiing, hiking and white water rafting. Rafting reaches class four levels in the spring. Trips boast spectacular views as you cruise down the Tara River – located in the second deepest canyon in the world. The monastery is carved entirely into a vertical mountain cliff and is Montenegro’s most popular pilgrimage destination. With its cave-like chapel, this is one of the three most visited Christian destinations on the planet. And with access through mountain paths, this is an adventure not to be missed.
