Introducing Essaouira

This ancient walled town of western Morocco is set to become one of its premier adventure tourism destinations. The town is situated on a huge curved bay with a medieval Medina at its northern end and the crumbling 'castles in the sand' - it's said these inspired Jimi Hendrix to write a song of the same name - at its southern tip. Essaouria has two additional redeeming features for certain adventure sports enthusiasts: it gets a lot of wind, and enjoys really big waves

The western coastline of Morocco sits on approximately the same latitude as California and is blessed with great waves in the winter months and strong wind in the... (Read more...)

Introducing Essaouira (Continued...)

summer. Further south, the Taghazout/Agadir has long been known to surfers who flock there throughout Europe's winter months. More recently, Essaouria and its surrounding spots, which include Sidi Kaouiki and Moulay Bouzertoune, have become magnets for windsurfers, and more recently, kite surfers. Consistent strong winds most of the year and a big swell have made this stretch of coastline one of Europe's and North Africa's premier wave spots

However, it's not all about riding waves. The main bay in Essaouria is sheltered from the swell by Mogador Island making it a good spot to learn to surf, kitesurf and windsurf. For those not wanting to dip their toes in the Atlantic, then there are a number of other pursuits to keep you occupied. You can take camel rides and go horseback riding along the vast expanse of white sand beach, take a quad bike safari in the dunes, book a fishing trip on one of the local charters, or just spend your days lying by the pool and wandering around the Medina

There is a wealth of accommodation options in the Medina and on the beach, ranging from exquisite boutique Riads to massive 5-star hotels, such as the Sofitel and the Atlas. You just have to decide if you prefer being in town or on the beach - either way a short walk along the promenade and you can enjoy both areas. And make sure you wonder around the various town markets and the old port if you want to see a bit of the 'real' Essaouria.
