However, it's not all about riding waves. The main bay in Essaouria is sheltered from the swell by Mogador Island making it a good spot to learn to surf, kitesurf and windsurf. For those not wanting to dip their toes in the Atlantic, then there are a number of other pursuits to keep you occupied. You can take camel rides and go horseback riding along the vast expanse of white sand beach, take a quad bike safari in the dunes, book a fishing trip on one of the local charters, or just spend your days lying by the pool and wandering around the Medina
There is a wealth of accommodation options in the Medina and on the beach, ranging from exquisite boutique Riads to massive 5-star hotels, such as the Sofitel and the Atlas. You just have to decide if you prefer being in town or on the beach - either way a short walk along the promenade and you can enjoy both areas. And make sure you wonder around the various town markets and the old port if you want to see a bit of the 'real' Essaouria.
