Introducing Everest

Located in the Himalayas on the Nepal-China border, Mt. Everest is the highest mountain above sea level in the world. At 29,002 ft. the climbing challenge attracts experienced mountaineers and novice climbers from round the world.

There have been more than 4,000 ascents to the summit, and climbers are an important part of the tourism industry in Nepal. By the end of 2009, Everest had claimed 216 lives. While not posing substantial technical difficulties, climbing Mt Everest has many dangers, such as altitude sickness and freezing temperatures. As the ultimate location in thrill-seeking and accomplishment, it’s no wonder that Everest still... (Read more...)

Introducing Everest (Continued...)

remains such a sought-after challenge.

Most attempts are made during May, before the monsoon season sets in. Additional snow deposited by the monsoons and the less stable weather patterns makes climbing in September and October extremely difficult. For those after a great adventure, but not wanting to risk their lives, trekking to a base camp is still an incredible achievement.

Base camp on the southeast ridge sits at 17,700 ft. The hike usually takes six to eight days, accompanied by Sherpas with supplies carried by yaks. Hikers will pass lush forests and stunning mountain scenery. Trips usually begin in Nepal, a country with unique geographical features and rich bio-diversity. The elevation of the country means visitors can enjoy climatic conditions from sub-tropical to arctic. This wild deviation fosters thick tropical jungles teeming with wildlife, thundering rivers, forested hills, and frozen valleys, as well as the greatest mountain range on Earth.

Hiking isn’t the only adventure to experience in this part of the world: Hot-air balloon rides and kayaking are both extremely popular around the base of Everest. These sports provide a unique way of viewing this sublime landscape.
