Getting There
By train. From Zürich airport via Bern, Spiez, through the Lötschberg tunnel to Brig. At Brig you change to the special Zermatt train at the front of the Brig station. Travel time from Zürich to Brig is about three-and-a-half hours, Brig to Zermatt an hour and 20 minutes. Trains run from the Geneva airport to Brig in two hours. You can purchase tickets on the Swiss Rail’s Web site: http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en Note: You can check your bags through to Zermatt from the airport, but cost is €13 per bag, and they might not arrive for three days. The trip from Milan is slightly shorter and less expensive, but the ride in from the airport to the train station adds easily another 60–90 minutes to the trip. By car. From Montreux, go up the Valais pass through Sion to Visp, where you turn south and follow signs to Zermatt. The car park, just outside the village of Täsch, is about three miles from Zermatt. Buses and trains connect Täsch with Zermatt approximately ev-ery 20 minutes; the ride takes eleven minutes. Parking costs €4.80 per day. If you are driving from Zürich or Basel, you can also take the Lötschberg tunnel from Kandersteg to Goppen-stein, above Brig and Visp. Trains, with your car aboard, transit the tunnel every half hour from 5:10 a.m. to 11:10 p.m.; the trip takes only 15 minutes. Cost per car, including nine-seat vans, is €16.50. From Goppenstein, continue your drive to Visp, then on to Täsch. If you choose you can park you car for free in Visp and take the train to Zermatt. Upon arriving in the village take a taxi to your hotel or apartment. The more upscale hotels usually have their own electric taxis or horse drawn carriages waiting for guests. There are plenty of electric taxis and sleighs for hire. The taxis charge by number of people and luggage, but other than going to and from the train station you can survive without ever using one. Taxi charges range from normally from €8–€12 and the sleighs about €13. For taxis call 084-8111212. Air Zermatt Helicopters can be called at 027-966-8686.
